Does Holly 'go' with Laura?

BegoniasAndPetunias · 21/07/2018 10:45

We have a Laura and are planning on calling dc2 Holly if it's a girl.

My MIL says that they're very different 'types' of name and don't really go well together, as Laura is 'classic' and Holly is 'modern' (by which I suspect she means chavvy).

Does anyone agree/disagree?

Both lovely names and I think they go together beautifully.

mostdays · 21/07/2018 10:47

One of those names is mine and the other is the name of my best friend from primary school 30 odd years ago. I think they go together very well!

Umm, well I called DD Holly and I certainly don't think of us as chavvy! It's a botanical name, which is one of the reasons I like it. Also goes well with Laura.

AnyaMoondial · 21/07/2018 11:11

Both beautiful names, they go really well together.

Icklepup · 21/07/2018 11:56

Yes, they go

iheartmichellemallon · 21/07/2018 11:58

Yes

onalongsabbatical · 21/07/2018 11:59

They're lovely together. Smile

AdaColeman · 21/07/2018 12:07

I think Holly is a seasonal name, lovely for a girl born around Christmas time, but I wouldn't use it for a summer child.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 21/07/2018 13:30

Very nice, both lovely names that go well together.

LeeMiller · 21/07/2018 14:14

I agree, they go very well.

kenandbarbie · 21/07/2018 14:15

I think they are similar names which go together nicely. Holly is just as classic in my mind.

kenandbarbie · 21/07/2018 14:16

Also, don't ask your mil opinion till babies are born!!!

AtticaRose · 21/07/2018 14:33

Both botanical (leafy plants rather than flowers).

Both popular in 20th century - maybe a little less popular now, which is no bad thing.

I think they "go together" a perfect amount! Not matchy-matchy, but a similar feel.

mangomama91 · 21/07/2018 14:42

I think they go very well together

DramaAlpaca · 21/07/2018 14:45

I agree with your MIL that they are different types of name, but despite that I think they sound really good together.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 21/07/2018 20:19

Had to double check it was Laura as everyone has said it goes with Holly!

It doesn't imo. At all. But if you like it then go for it.

FWIW I would put Laura with Elisabeth, Rachel, Sarah, Bethany, Josie, Catherine and Jane.

MyOtherProfile · 21/07/2018 20:21

They go together for me. Although I didn't know until this thread that names are supposed to go together. Never crossed my mind when I was choosing names for my dc.

Lmj25 · 21/07/2018 20:22

I think they do One is mine and the other my cousinsSmile

Shesaysso · 21/07/2018 20:22

I think they go really well together - surprised some people don’t.

Knittedfairies · 21/07/2018 20:23

I think they ‘go’ too.

SoftBlocks · 21/07/2018 20:25

I think they go really well although Holly has less gravitas and is more of a ‘little sister’ sort of name.

Pudding01 · 21/07/2018 21:10

I've never known anyone think Holly is a chavvy name, so I wouldn't worry about that 🙂 It might also be my name... lol

Sounds fine with Laura too. Although for some reason, Kate comes to mind x

crayoladreamz · 21/07/2018 21:12

They don’t really go together to my ear. I agree with your MIL but it’s your decision

BegoniasAndPetunias · 21/07/2018 22:12

Glad to hear Holly isn't 'chavvy'! I certainly don't think it is, but MIL has some rather strong opinions on which names she considers to be 'proper' (there's probably only about 30 names on her list, tbh)

I think they’re fine.
