Does Holly 'go' with Laura?

We have a Laura and are planning on calling dc2 Holly if it's a girl.

My MIL says that they're very different 'types' of name and don't really go well together, as Laura is 'classic' and Holly is 'modern' (by which I suspect she means chavvy).

Does anyone agree/disagree?

@GreatDuckCookery

Bethany is second on our list after Holly and is still very much in the running, so that's interesting to hear, thank you!

Your MIL is right, and admirably tactful too!

moredoll · 22/07/2018 02:47

Don't think it's chavvy, but it's too many 'l's to work together.

Zommum · 22/07/2018 03:00

Shout Holly Laura, get inside right now! Then you will know if the names go well.

Pudding01 · 22/07/2018 06:14

I do think Beth fits better with Laura 🙂 But both are fine x

Candyflip · 22/07/2018 06:22

I don’t think they go. I don’t use the word chavvy, but Holly is a very dated name whereas Laura is timeless.

Sessy19 · 22/07/2018 06:24

The name Holly grows on me all the time. I don’t instantly think of Christmas or a winter association with it, sad that people are so ‘pigeon-holey’ about everything these days...including names for BABIES!!!

Anyway. I guess perhaps your MIL considers Holly is less of a ‘traditional’ name, but you can point out that Truman Capote wrote about a Holly😁

Ps My Mother is EXACTLY the same about names, she’s a fucking snob!!!

StrawberryCat · 22/07/2018 07:33

They don't 'not go', if you know what i mean. But i would put them in slightly different categories. But holly isn't chavvy! And if you love it, use it!

I'd group Laura with Elizabeth, Anne, Emma, Alice, Frances, Rebecca, Sarah, Victoria.
And Holly with Lydia, Poppy, Millie, Jessica, Verity, Samantha, Lucy.

Written down together I read Holly and Laurel rather than Laura.

Maybe if it's written the other way round it wouldn't read like that though and as Laura is older most people you know will already know her name.

AlliKaneErikson · 22/07/2018 09:39

I know sisters called Holly and Laura- I think they are lively together.

Smoliver · 22/07/2018 18:06

Holly is one of my favourite names. It makes me think of Holly Golightly from the film Breakfast at Tiffany's. Definitely not chavvy.

Holly and Laura go well together imo.

BertieBotts · 22/07/2018 18:09

They are fine and she is being bonkers.

Applepudding2018 · 22/07/2018 18:27

Yes - both lovely girls names.

Fleetwoodmac2 · 24/07/2018 08:02

Well my SILs are twins called Holly and Laura, so I would say they go quite well Grin

daisypond · 24/07/2018 08:12

They're slightly different styles, but not extremely so. I do think Laura has more of the classic vibe about it than Holly, though.

LoveInTokyo · 24/07/2018 18:52

Both lovely names and they go fine together.

foxtiger · 03/08/2018 22:16

I guess Holly as a name is newer than Laura, but I like them both and I think they'd make quite good sibling names, precisely because they're not too obviously matchy.

Madeline18 · 04/08/2018 11:45

I don't think holly is chavvy but I don't think holly and Laura go together.

Laura and Alice
Laura and Grace
Laura and Margot
Laura and Anna
Laura and Kate

AntiqueOlive · 04/08/2018 11:49

They are both lovely names but together it's a bit red lorry yellow lorry

RavenWings · 04/08/2018 14:04

They're not a matching set in the way that Noelle and Holly would be, but they sound fine together. It's not like you're naming one Persephone and the other Char'dunai-Mae.

Both easy to spell and inoffensive.

BlackberryandNettle · 04/08/2018 22:52

Weirdly I know of a subset in their 30s called Holly and Laura, so clearly their parents thought the names went. I have always thought the names are a little different in style (Holly seems more frivolous and Laura more classic) and assume Holly was a Christmas baby although actually don't know if that's the case.
