Hi, I’m expecting DC3 in the next 2 or 3 weeks; we don’t know the sex.

I would be really interested to hear thoughts on both my boy and girl shortlists. DH likes all of these too (although is less keen on Delilah and Samuel) but neither of us have a clear favourite.

Please can you help by picking your favourites?

Delilah
Romilly
Imogen
Diana
Hero
Mina
Matilda

Vincent
Gabriel
Samuel

TIA!

If it's a girl Delilah is lovely and Diana is also nice, but not sure about the nn Do, which she may well end up being called. Would you consider Samson rather than Samuel? I think it sounds nicer, having Samson or Delilah as your final two would be interesting - I guess as you aren't having twins it wouldn't matter though!

Scottishgirl85 · 02/07/2018 12:34

Matilda or Delilah, and Samuel. Not so keen on the others. What are your other dcs called? Good luck!

Icklepup · 02/07/2018 12:36

Romilly or Imogen
Vincent

Scottishgirl85 · 02/07/2018 12:36

There are a million Immys around and Diana seems quite old fashioned and will be shortened to Di, my MIL's name!

Lobsterquadrille2 · 02/07/2018 12:37

Delilah, Matilda and Samuel.

Fivelittleduckies · 02/07/2018 12:39

Definitely helps to know your other kids’ names.

From your list I like Samuel and Delilah

AdaColeman · 02/07/2018 12:42

Romilly and Hero are my favourites from your list.

I don't like Delilah or Mina. Matilda is lovely but already quite popular.

Vincent is my favourite from your list, but the others are fine too.

MikeUniformMike · 02/07/2018 12:48

Delilah - No. Pretty but bad associations
Romilly - No.
Imogen - Not keen sorry and dislike Immy
Diana - beautiful
Hero - too much to live up to
Mina - Mean-a
Matilda - a bit too popular

Vincent - no
Gabriel - no
Samuel -yes

Diana and Samuel

Thanks for all the responses so far Smile

My other children are Aria (named before it became popular) and Alfred. So no more A names!

Matilda or Delilah, and Samuel.
I really don't like Vincent, or the shortened versions such as Vinnie or Vince.

deptfordgirl · 02/07/2018 12:52

Matilda and Samuel.

iamthefox · 02/07/2018 12:54

I love Delilah so much, but it is the bad associations putting us off (DH more than me).

Would be interested to hear if anyone out there has (or is) a Delilah and what responses they get?

Romilly and Samuel are my favourites!

KellyBailey · 02/07/2018 13:05

Matilda and Samuel.

jeanzbeanz · 02/07/2018 13:26

Romilly is lovely! Might pinch that for my list!

17caterpillars1mouse · 02/07/2018 13:29

I really like Mina though i think i prefed it spelt Meena personally. Its really pretty and i've never met one
From your boys i like Samuel best but second the suggestion of Samson

iamthefox · 02/07/2018 13:48

Thanks all, this is really helping me organise my thoughts. Also reviving my love for Romilly which has been on my list since before I had DS 2+ years ago. It was my sister’s favourite when I shared the list with her recently too.

I keep coming back to Diana, which is such a beautiful, strong name... but you’ve all reminded me it will get shortened to Di - which sounds comically awful next to my daughter’s name (Aria). One for the middle name list perhaps!

To those suggesting Samson, it’s a great name but I do like Samuel better.

Matilda or Samuel

bettybyebye · 02/07/2018 13:55

OP I have a Delilah Smile she is 3 in a few weeks and we have had nothing but compliments on her name.

Admittedly, people could be slagging it off behind our backs but I don’t care as me and dh absolutely love the name!

Breckenridge · 02/07/2018 14:04

Delilah - beautiful

Romilly - I find this one really interesting. It's so popular on Mumsnet but I've never met one or even heard of the name in real life. It's very pretty though.

Imogen - love it, though I'm not crazy about the inevitable nickname Immy

Diana - lovely, but it's the nickname Di, isn't it?

Hero - no, too out-there, and a lot of pressure for a kid to live up to. What if she's scared of spiders/insects? I can imagine her getting freaked out by one at a school camp and the other kids mocking her saying "I thought you were supposed to be a Hero"

Mina - no

Matilda - love it

Vincent - hate it. I think it's so ugly and dated. And can you imagine a child called Vince? Seriously? Vincent should be left in the 50s/60s along with Martin, Jill etc.

Gabriel - love it, and love 'Gabe' as a nn

Samuel - love it

ladycarlotta · 02/07/2018 14:07

I think Romilly is a fabulous name. Hero is great but I guess people hear it like superhero rather than the excellent Greek name it is. Mina is ace too. Personally I think Imogen is nice, and I know one (an adult) who has categorically never ever gone by Immy, which is IMHO a horrible diminutive.

Samuel is actually on my own list - Gabriel and Vincent are great too though.

HeyDolly · 02/07/2018 15:06
  1. Romilly
2, Imogen
  1. Delilah

Not keen on any of the boys names but Vincent if I had to pick followed by Gabriel.

iamthefox · 02/07/2018 15:23

@bettybyebye that’s good to know!

lenalove · 02/07/2018 15:28

OP would you consider shortening Romilly to Romy? Love the name Romy, and it's still fairly unusual!

iamthefox · 02/07/2018 15:37

@lenalove yes we would use Romilly officially but probably day to day use a shortening like Romy.
