Baby nearly due and still don't have a name to go with the surname 'Allitt' - it's a strange name and we can't seem to find any names to suit. Don't know if it's a girl or a boy. This is a bit outing but I'm at the end of my tether. Any ideas?

And yes, Janet has been suggested a few times. The funniness has worn off a bit Grin

What sort of names do you like and what sort of names do you definitely not like?

NicoleLorenzo · 22/06/2018 21:33

We don't have a specific type of name. We would like something timeless for a girl or something unique for a boy. Would like them both to travel well too so nothing hard to pronounce. We really are clueless we just can't think of anything we both love! Panic stations..

We DON'T like overly American names like Cody or Jaden, and don't like silly names for girls like Daisy-boo or Milly-Mae etc..

Don't go for Beverley

wizzywig · 22/06/2018 21:35

Or timmy

AssassinatedBeauty · 22/06/2018 21:38

Curious why timeless for a girl but unique for a boy?

Unique is going to be difficult unless you invent a spelling or use a word that isn't normally used for names. Have you looked at recent baby name lists and looked at the less popular end for ideas?

What about Rebecca, or Kate?

NicoleLorenzo · 22/06/2018 21:38

I don't get it Confused

@AssassinatedBeauty they just happen to be the types of names we gravitate towards. Nothing to do with social norms or wanting a girl to be girly and a boy to be cool etc. I like Maria for a girl, timeless and strong, no idea if it's a boy. Maybe unique was the wrong word. Maybe I means uncommon...

Louise, Stephanie, Penelope, Audrey mavis

rock, Euston, Everton, Claude

SnailMailTrail · 22/06/2018 21:41

I'd go for something that has a few syllables and won't run together with your surname. Fancy Elizabeth? It has lots of options for nicknames Eliza, Ellie, Beth, Libby, Liz etc.

TheCheeseStandsAlone · 22/06/2018 21:44

Maria with the old-fashioned pronunciation (‘Mariah’) would be really nice.

AssassinatedBeauty · 22/06/2018 21:44

Beverley Allitt was a serial child killer.

Timmy Mallett is a comedy TV personality from the 80s/90s, I guess Timmy Allitt sounds like that if you say it quickly.

Icklepup · 22/06/2018 21:49

Maeve, Lydia, Anna, Rose,
Rowan, Silas, Magnus, Dale.

Elizabeth sounds lovely with your surname.

Ophelia, Ismay, Ivy, Bethany, Niamh

Rueben, Cade, Milo, Dax, Rory

What do you like/dislike out of the suggestions so far so we know if we're on the right track? Hope you find something you love!

Picknickers · 22/06/2018 23:50

Give the OP a break with the Beverley Allitt comments. She didn't choose to have the same surname and it's not a nice or funny connection.
OP I'd avoid names ending in A.
Maybe
Dominic
Rufus
Lawrence
Francis
Frances
Marianne
Penelope
Beatrix

WhereIsBlueRabbit · 22/06/2018 23:53

I see what you mean about it being a tricky surname! It feels as though names ending in a consonant may work best. Or an -a. How about:

Rosamund
Rosalie
Martha
Marina
Grace
Hannah
Nina

Seth
Gabriel
Lucas
Peter
Francis

Jessica.
It's my name.
I think it's lovely. I prefer being called Jessica although many people do use Jess.
My brother calls me Jessie, the only person that does.
I think it's a really lovely name and I genuinely do love my name.
I named both of my children "royal" names. I chose names that were classic and traditional because I personally feel they're strong.

Edward Allitt is lovely. ( my BIL is Edward but has been called Woody his whole life.)

TheVanguardSix · 23/06/2018 00:19

Theodore

TheVanguardSix · 23/06/2018 00:20

And Marina or Mariella would be my girls’ suggestions.

True, but I’d be avoiding anything that starts with a B.
