Baby nearly due and still don't have a name to go with the surname 'Allitt' - it's a strange name and we can't seem to find any names to suit. Don't know if it's a girl or a boy. This is a bit outing but I'm at the end of my tether. Any ideas?

I'm ready to pop and worried about a name and you think it's appropriate to refer to a child serial killer and tell me that's the first thing you think of when you hear my child's surname? Nice.

I like

Ophelia

Reuben
Gabriel

So far! Thank you folks

Having been a bit baby name obsessed in my time, and a few children in, I've perhaps over thought some of this. Fwiw my view is that you need a first name with hard consonants. Your surname has soft consonants. For example Rowan Allitt has a different effect to Richard Allitt. You might prefer a softer sound. I prefer the harder sounding consonants for boys names. But this is a whole different generation with changing views on gender so you might take this into account too.

In my experience it's easier to find girls names whatever the surname.

Names ending in A aren't too bad with Allitt - there's lots for girls, but hard sounds eg Isodora Allitt is better to my ear than Isabella Allitt.

Watch how the end consonant of the first name, links to the A in Allitt when you say the full name. So perhaps avoid names ending in m, p or w.

I love Maria and it's fine with Allitt. She will be M.Allitt but so what. Edward works too. Reuben works a lot better than Gabriel in terms of ease of pronunciation (imagine young children in KS1 pronouncing Gabriel Allitt or if he had some articulation difficulty).

I wouldn't call Ophelia a classic timeless name. Maria is really nice. Or variations of it - Marina, Marianne, etc. I like Gabriel for a boy, but not keen on Reuben - but both are quite well used these days.

juneau · 23/06/2018 09:39

Reuben is a sandwich.

And while you may not want people to mention Beverley Allitt, I think it's necessary to warn you away from that name, just in case you hadn't heard it, because when I hear your unusual surname I'm afraid she's the person who comes to mind. For that reason I'd avoid anything ending in -ley.

Gabriel is nice - I considered that for DS2 (although DH just raised an eyebrow - as he did at most of my suggestions).

NicoleLorenzo · 23/06/2018 10:28

I don't think anyone in this generation is likely to call they kid Beverley...

I have just googled Reuben sandwich. Never heard of one before. Certainly doesn't seem a reason to rule out the name!

MikeUniformMike · 23/06/2018 12:34

I would avoid a name ending in -a or -ah.
Maria Allitt would be Maria Rallitt.

Trinnidad · 07/07/2018 23:35

I went to school with a girl called Tara Allitt if it helps! Good name!

bridgetreilly · 08/07/2018 11:43

Mary Allitt
Margaret Allitt
Lois Allitt
Charis Allitt
Chloe Allitt
Saskia Allitt
Eleanor Allitt
Naomi Allitt

I actually think it sounds fine with most names!
