Ellis-Harper for our girls name?

Me and my DH absolutely love the name Ellis for a girl after both of our favourite authors, Ellis bell (Emily Brontë) and Bret Easton Ellis. We’ve had mixed reviews on this with people absolutely either living or hating it!

I love double barralled names and boy names for girls and I like the sound of Ellis-Harper. What’s everyone’s thoughts?

but so unsure of a name to pair with it

You might like Ellis-Hannah or Emily-Harper.

Or maybe Greer?

Good luck :)

I don't like surname names on girls, and I don't generally like double barrelled names either.

Ellis isn't too bad I suppose, but put with Harper it's very harsh. I'd choose one of them with a more feminine name with it.

MoggyP · 27/05/2018 19:21

Ellis is the Bronte male name, when Emily deliberately wanted to disguise her sex to enable publication. The (female) author Ellis Peters chose it as a deliberate homage in order to hide her sex too.

I know only male Ellis IRL.

But if you like masculine names on a girl, at least you're not going for James or Max!

I absolutely love harper! However Ellis for me is a boys name 💙 and Ellis-Harper sounds like a double barrelled surname! I'm so sorry , but Harper is such a beautiful name alone 💖

SoyDora · 27/05/2018 19:23

Definitely sounds like a law firm or an estate agent.
I only know male Ellis’ so struggle to get my head round it as a girls name.

CorianderSnell · 27/05/2018 19:24

Ellis-Hera
Ellis-Tia
Ellis-Ren
Ellis-Rae
Ellis-Cara

???

I don't like names with a hyphen so I'd say no to it but Ellis isn't so bad on its own?

TheNoseyProject · 27/05/2018 19:28

A double-barrelled surname as a first name for a girl. I suppose it's yoonique.
Hyphenated first names are generally looked down on in the UK.
People tend to have an opinion about surnames as first names.
Ellis is normally a boy's name.

Couldn’t agree more. As an aside, a psychologist friend of mine has a theory that these very ‘unique’ names turn people into raving narcissists as every time they introduce themselves they have to do a whole spiel about their name, so from a young age turn every conversation they join round to being about them.

Call her Emily if you like Emily bronte. I’m sure she’ll have a lovely personality you don’t need to give her a ‘look at me’ name.

supersop60 · 27/05/2018 19:29

I'm trying to imagine the teacher calling out her name. I would go un-hyphenated.

Sagegreen · 27/05/2018 19:31

Ellis really is a boy's name and as others have said was used to make Emily into a boy's name and hide the sex of the author...if you must use it then pair it with a very female name; for example Ellis-Ann but consider Elisa which is a lovely female name?

Cosmoa · 27/05/2018 19:47

@Foxff1 my 25 year old sister is called Ellis and I adore the name Kaiyah so I looove your naming style!! (almost called my daughter Kaia but we went for Eska instead!.. She's 11 days old Smile)

Just go for it... My sister doesn't have any issues being a girl called Ellis!

MyAuntyBadger · 27/05/2018 19:49

I have an Ellis ds, so I love the name, but agree with dropping the hyphen.

georgeisadinosaur · 27/05/2018 19:59

I love Ellis but hyphenated names to me just sound a bit tacky.

Harper is becoming quite popular now too if that bothers you.

As a primary school teacher - double barrelled names are so hard to fit into labels 😭

Sounds a bit Grey's anatomy

Namelesswonder · 27/05/2018 20:16

Where I am Ellis is an old man name! Youngest I know is a 53 yr old man.

Foxff1 · 27/05/2018 20:16

@Cosmoa Wow! The name Eska is beautiful! Such a stunning name! Thank you 😊 xx

Neither name particularly lovely.

MikeUniformMike · 27/05/2018 20:19

Go for it Fox.

Foxff1 · 27/05/2018 20:20

@Coriandersnell I really like your suggestion of Ellis-Rae 😍 it’s just lovely thank you xx

Ohh this has made me a bit sad 😬. My 1 year old daughter is called Ellis. We adore it, and feel that it is perfectly feminine, and has a cool, simple feel.
We've had lovely feedback about her name.

stopdropandroll · 27/05/2018 20:22

i know an “eliz” which is pronounced like “ellis” - could that be an option (on its own)?

RockinRobinTweets · 27/05/2018 20:22

Maybe Alice-Harper?

Do you watch Greys anatomy? They’re both names of dead characters
