Ellis-Harper for our girls name?

Me and my DH absolutely love the name Ellis for a girl after both of our favourite authors, Ellis bell (Emily Brontë) and Bret Easton Ellis. We’ve had mixed reviews on this with people absolutely either living or hating it!

I love double barralled names and boy names for girls and I like the sound of Ellis-Harper. What’s everyone’s thoughts?

I don't like the hyphen OP, but I know a female Ellis and she's wonderful Smile in my mind it's a strong unisex name.

MadisonAvenue · 27/05/2018 21:03

I like both names on their own but not hyphenated.

HelloDC1 · 27/05/2018 21:06

@MollyHuaCha bloody hell! Get a life.

bankhollnc · 27/05/2018 21:09

Oooh very Greys anatomy! That's the first thing I thought of.

There's Ellis grey who died and then Meredith named her child Ellis so there's technically 2 Ellis's and then there's the Harper Avery award which runs through the entire thing... it's now related to multiple sexual harassment cases.

I like Ellis as a name, and I like Harper as a name but not together. Sounds too much like 2 last names smushed together. Then there's the Greys thing as well which to a lot of people would make you seem like a crazed mega fan😂

I spent years of my life thinking ellis was a girl’s name, until I had a boyfriend called ellis who hated people assuming his name was a girl name! So on that basis I’d not call a daughter of mine ellis. It’s a gorgeous name, but ellis harper is a bit of a mouthful too as they don’t quite flow together. Perhaps swap the names - Harper as a first name and Ellis as middle? :)

Foxff1 · 27/05/2018 21:13

@bankhollnc

Oh no! Yes to be honest I definitely think we’ll be dropping the Harper OH wasn’t a huge fan to begin with either. I don’t watch Greys Anatomy but the crazed fan comment has been the nail in the coffin😂, thank you for your input very much appreciated 😊

I disagree that hyphenated first names are considered "lower class". I work in a naice secondary school with a very rural, middle class catchment area and lots of the pupils have double barrelled first names. I've never really thought anything of it until joining mn and reading all the baby name threads!

Anyway, if you like Ellis then go for it OP. I'm just not sure Ellis-Harper flows that well? I like the suggestion of Ellis-Rose. I definitely think a softer second name would work better.

SeriousSass · 27/05/2018 21:33

MollyHuaCha. 😂😂😂. I’ve checked the register too. I like the guy with ‘Christmas’ as one of his middle names. To be fair most of the barristers names are quite ‘barrister’y’.

SeriousSass · 27/05/2018 21:35

OP, what letter does your surname begin with?

ChiefSpoon · 27/05/2018 21:42

Sounds awful in my northern accent tbf.

UndomesticHousewife · 27/05/2018 21:57

Ellis is nice though I thought it was a boys name.
Harper sounds like you're copying the Beckhams.
Ellis-Harper sounds like a first and surname.

CowbellPopular · 27/05/2018 22:01

I think it's gorgeous, unusual and strong.

Idgie · 27/05/2018 22:07

I think Ellis is fine. I'm really not a fan of hyphenated first names. I always find them really awkward. I would assume she would choose one to be known by anyway so why not just choose one. There's an Alexis-Rose in one of our baby classes and it's just odd. I feel like we are using her first and middle name. I'd just go for Ellis or Harper.

rosegeorgia21 · 27/05/2018 22:11

I used to be friends with a girl called 'Eilis' - pronounced ey-lish. Always thought that was a lovely name. Maybe consider jumping around the pronunciation of it! I liked the name in the first place anyway though!

Joeybee · 27/05/2018 22:28

Not a fan of hyphenated first names tbh. I think the names are okay and they mean something to you, which is important. If I were you I'd go without hyphenating the name.
Surnames as first names, and hyphenated names will be polarising, so prepare yourself that you'll get mixed reviews from family/friends.
However their opinion is not as important as what you feel is right, if you like this name - go for it.

bankhollnc · 27/05/2018 22:55

Glad to be of help, and congratulations🙂

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 27/05/2018 23:21

Eska is beautiful.
I like Ellis-Rae, much softer.

bridgetreilly · 27/05/2018 23:34

Ellis-Bextor.

Reaa · 27/05/2018 23:42

How about Elise instead of Ellis

Elise Harper

NorthernLurker · 27/05/2018 23:48

Well it's pretty dire but it's your baby so you do what you like

CocoAndTheChocolates · 27/05/2018 23:48

I think they're both lovely but they don't marry up nicely for a hyphenated name. I'd drop the hyphen put Harper as a middle and then you can always refer to her as Ellis Harper in the family.

I don't believe anyone at school would bother with the Harper bit as Ellis is a stand alone name

Cosmoa · 28/05/2018 04:22

Thanks @Sugarpiehoneyeye.. Not sure why Eska got such a weird reaction when I first posted about it!

huha · 28/05/2018 04:23

Very Greys Anatomy

user1471552178 · 28/05/2018 20:01

I know of a girl called Ellis but spelt Ellice if you’re looking for a more feminine version

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 28/05/2018 21:47

Rae is awful sorry. Ellis is a boys name to me, Harper would be better with your other DD's name imo.
