Jonathan?

My DH and I are really struggling to agree on a name for our baby due in a couple of weeks. We don't know if it's a girl or boy, however we are pretty much sorted for a girls name and have narrowed it down to two.

However the only option DH likes for a boy (and we've been through lots!!!) is Jonathan. I can't get him to consider anything else 😐

Its not a name that jumped out at me but as he's vetoed almost everything else I just wanted to put the feelers out and see what sort of opinions were out there and any associations to be aware of? I guess I'm worried that it doesn't strike me as a baby name...

My first thought is that it's a little dated sounding.
However it's a good, strong name. I don't think someone could draw assumptions about a child/person based off this name.
People would naturally shorten it to John, so you'd have to be okay with that nickname.
This is a name I'd probably quite like if it wasn't my brothers name!
Oh and btw It could also be spelt Johnathan.

Ds is called Jonathan.
Personally I love it but most people in authority ie teachers etc spell it Jonathon
His friends all call him Jonny.
His dad calls him Jonty

My brother and my BiL are both Jonathans. My brother goes by ( and has always gone by) his middle name, but not because he doesn't like the name. Might this be an option for you as a compromise? Jonathan something?

I'm fine with it being shortened to Jon, John or Jonty (didn't think of that one) so that would be ok. Thanks for flagging the different spellings though that hadn't crossed my mind.

We're thinking of using Andrew as a middle name which is really growing on me, but as it's a close family name it could get confusing to use as a first name.

Jonathan Andrew is great imo.

(I also like Andreas Jonathan, btw.)

Jonathan Andrew is a fantastic, strong name for a little boy.

I have a friend with a DS called Jonathan. I wasn't keen on the name at first but he's a sweet wee boy so it's grown on me. They call him Jono as a NN.

Personally not a fan , 50 year old man is the first thing that comes to my head sorry🙈🙈

I would probably use Jonjon as a pet name when he's little, then Probably Johnny later.

The only ones I know are in their 20s or their 50s. It's a lovely name, definitely due a revival, as is Andrew.

Please don't spell it Johnathan though, that's just plain wrong & looks like the parents liked the name but didn't have a clue how to spell it. Jonathon is an acceptable alternative spelling but Jonathan is the nicest version.

I would just add (in a totally non biased way ) my son Jonathan is now 20 and the light of all our lives.

He was my third dc and by far the most placid gentle child ever.
He has grown to a strapping 6ft of loveliness popular with his peers and employers.

My son in law is a Johnathan which is shortened to Johni. I like Andrew as the middle name.
