Jonathan?

My DH and I are really struggling to agree on a name for our baby due in a couple of weeks. We don't know if it's a girl or boy, however we are pretty much sorted for a girls name and have narrowed it down to two.

However the only option DH likes for a boy (and we've been through lots!!!) is Jonathan. I can't get him to consider anything else 😐

Its not a name that jumped out at me but as he's vetoed almost everything else I just wanted to put the feelers out and see what sort of opinions were out there and any associations to be aware of? I guess I'm worried that it doesn't strike me as a baby name...

DS (20) is a Jonathan. His friends call him Jon or Jonny.

scurryfunge · 27/05/2018 09:23

Joe can also be a nickname too.

I know a Jonathan nn Jonty (adult) but hadn't heard that diminutive before, I like it a lot

SpectacularAardvark · 27/05/2018 10:29

I have a Jonathan, he gets Jonny or Jon from friends and sometimes Jonathing from me. Grin

daisypond · 27/05/2018 10:33

Jonathan is really nice and I like all the possible diminutives as well. Y

Love the name Jonathan - and all its various shortenings! I couldn't persuade DH though Sad

dinodiva · 27/05/2018 16:16

I have a brand new Jonathan, chose it because we liked the different shortened versions and felt it was a name that would grow with him.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 27/05/2018 16:27

Really like it!

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 27/05/2018 17:45

DH is Jonathan and I think it's a great name but just be warned that very few people seem to be able to spell it properly!! We've sent back many official forms and letters to be changed over the years.

villainousbroodmare · 27/05/2018 18:33

I really like it. Caution: I know a Johnathon whose parents just misspelled his name and he is perpetually embarrassed by it.

mochachocochino · 27/05/2018 21:07

Thanks everyone for all your comments, you've reassured me somewhat Smile

Jonathan is lovely. An under-used classic.

I also think Andrew is lovely and another under-used classic. However! Combining the two, Jonathan Andrew, sounds perhaps a little dated. I'd probably expect a Jonathan Andrew to be born in the 1980s or 1990s. Not a major problem, of course, just my thoughts. If you're set on Andrew, maybe using another middle between the two could be an option:

Jonathan Ellis Andrew
Jonathan Lucas Andrew
Jonathan Zachary Andrew
Jonathan Rory Andrew
Jonathan Oscar Andrew

NotTheMrMenAgain · 27/05/2018 23:34

My DH is a Jonathan Andrew and he's lovely.....

Velvetbee · 27/05/2018 23:38

I know a 10 month old Jonathan. He’s a complete delight.

SusanWalker · 27/05/2018 23:43

I know a Jonathan shortened to Josh. But I love Jonny for a little boy. My son has a name with similar shortenings. When he was little he was the equivalent of Jonny, now he's older he's Jon or Jonathan.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 27/05/2018 23:46

I know a baby Jonathan. I think it's a good name!

elliejjtiny · 27/05/2018 23:48

Love the name Jonathan. It's one of those lovely names that you don't hear all the time but aren't really unusual. Love Andrew too.
