Do you prefer Mary or Marie?
I really don't like Maria so that's not even going to be considered!

Both are lovely. Marie is more modern but Mary is more unusual, well amongst children at least. I think I'd go with Mary

HeyDolly · 16/05/2018 20:09

Mary is my favourite. Unless you live in Ireland, like myself, where there are millions of Mary’s - generally over the age of 60. If you live in England or elsewhere I think it would be v cute for a little girl.

AnyaMoondial · 16/05/2018 20:10

Mary a million times over! It's beautiful, simple and elegant xx

MikeUniformMike · 16/05/2018 20:10

Mary but would choose Maria if it had been on the list.

mondler · 16/05/2018 20:38

I love Marie but there's 2 at work and both pronounce it differently and get very offended if you say it wrong! One pronounces it Maa-rie and the other Marry. It's a beautiful name though. I like Mary too or Maria.

redmini4 · 16/05/2018 20:40

For me Mary sounds nicer than Marie.

RexManning · 16/05/2018 20:43

Mary.

I also love Mairi.

HasAnyoneGotAProblemWithThat · 16/05/2018 20:45

I love both. I don’t particularly like Maria but only because I know so many!

gruffalopuffalo · 16/05/2018 20:48

I like Marie traditionally pronounced like marry, but if it's between Mary and Marie like m'ree then I'd vote Mary.

DramaAlpaca · 16/05/2018 20:49

Mary

User314 · 16/05/2018 20:49

Mary.

TheRollingCrone · 16/05/2018 21:10

Mary, Mary long before the fashions changed. Beautiful name.

MrsCD67 · 16/05/2018 21:14

Thanks so much everyone!

Mary is more unusual in younger people so I would go with that choice. I do know a couple of older Mary's only.

TatianaLarina · 16/05/2018 21:37

Marianne or Mariella.

I would never use a name that’s slang for vagina.

MrsCD67 · 16/05/2018 21:44

@tatianalarina
I've never heard of it as slang for vagina!

OP posts:
gruffalopuffalo · 16/05/2018 21:57

That's a new one on me too!

MrsCD67 · 16/05/2018 22:01

I really don't think it's something many people would think of when hearing the name...it's not like Fanny!

GrannyHaddock · 16/05/2018 22:04

There are plenty of variants of Mary: Maura, Mariella, Maryam. Look on Nameberry. If it is really just between those two, I would go for Marie.

TatianaLarina · 16/05/2018 22:06

I’d think quite a lot of people would. I’m surprised you haven’t heard it tbh.

bridgetreilly · 16/05/2018 22:15

Mary.

I've heard the slang but only on Mumsnet. I wouldn't let it worry me.

KenDoddsDadsDogIsDead · 16/05/2018 22:15

My daughter is called Mary. Never had any vagina related comments ( or anything else). Ever.

chezmk1988 · 16/05/2018 22:28

Marie

annandale · 16/05/2018 22:32

Definitely Mary. Super traditional, cool and attractive.

Ragusa · 16/05/2018 22:32
