Thoughts on Bastian for a boy? Not short for Sebastian just Bastian

Neverending story was first thing that came to mind here too. I like it.

clumsyduck · 05/05/2018 08:28

I also instantly think bastard and that it's missing the Seb at the front .

We're as Seb is a lovely name

GummyGoddess · 05/05/2018 08:37

Where are you from if it makes you think bastard? It doesn't sound anything like that in my accent.

I really like it but DH doesn't sadly as I had considered it for dc2. Makes DH think of a zone in our online game.

clumsyduck · 05/05/2018 08:40

Because it starts with "bast" ( well that's how I'd pronounce it ?!)

And I swear a lot Grin

HSMMaCM · 05/05/2018 09:08

There's a bastian in the book I'm reading. Seems like a perfectly acceptable name to me.

dementedma · 05/05/2018 09:10

i actually like it and it's definitlely better as a nn for Sebastian than Seb - although I get that that isn't the reason you want to use it.
However it does bring Camp Bastian to mind, and it will for many.

daisypond · 05/05/2018 09:14

I think Camp Bastion too and bastard too. So no.

Thingvellir · 05/05/2018 09:21

I love it. It's a well established name in France and other European languages. It looks a bit nicer in French spelling i think - Bastien.

If you go with Sebastian, you can nn to Bastian if you like but guaranteed everyone else will go with Seb!

TheCraicDealer · 05/05/2018 09:39

I quite like it, quite cool and continental without being too "wtf". I know a Bostjan from Slovenia who frequently gets called Bastian in error.

It's never made me think "bastard" and despite being an army wife it has no conotations with the camp for me. The ending of Bastion has a hard -on sound as opposed to the softer -ian.

sonnyboo · 05/05/2018 09:58

Unfortunately both Seb and Basty aren't great nicknames. Shame as Sebastian is nice otherwise.

Cosmoa · 05/05/2018 10:38

It's quite a harsh sounding name without the Seb in front if it...

sherrybaby11 · 05/05/2018 10:42

It's too much like bastard and other kids will know that too.

DrinkYourGreenTea · 05/05/2018 10:56

No way. Absolutely awful.

milkysmum · 05/05/2018 11:13

I immediately thought ' Bastard '- and I can guarantee growing up kids will do the same. Big no from me sorry.

NorbertTheDragon · 05/05/2018 11:15

I love it. My first thought was the boy from The Neverending Story.

GummyGoddess · 05/05/2018 11:22

It must depend on accent, the first sounds are completely different in my pronunciation!

MayFayner · 05/05/2018 11:28

No, awful. Agree it is reminiscent of bastard.

The Neverending Story is a film, this child will be living in reality in the 2020s so... no.

Glumglowworm · 05/05/2018 11:41

My immediate thought is Bastard

Sebastian known as Bastian is slightly better as it at least gives him other options

chezmk1988 · 05/05/2018 13:46

Nope. Sounds ridiculous to me as a stand alone name sorry.

NC4Now · 05/05/2018 13:49

I also thought Bastard, shortly followed by Camp Bastion.

No from me.

Enko · 05/05/2018 23:28

Was on our short list I love it.

NoSquirrels · 05/05/2018 23:31

It's the Neverending Story for me. Despite that nice association, I really dislike it.

OlennasWimple · 05/05/2018 23:40

Am I the only person who remembers Ali Bastian? Hollyoaks actress who went on Strictly - semi-finalist, I think

Anyway, no, OP, it's not a great name. There are so many lovely names out there!

What is it that you really like about Bastian? Can we help find something that has the same qualities?

blairsey · 06/05/2018 01:28

He will inevitably get called bastard by mates in high school.. so would have to say no.

Belphegor · 06/05/2018 01:31

I like it a lot. I don't think bastard, more Never Ending Story.
