Thoughts on Bastian for a boy? Not short for Sebastian just Bastian

OP posts:

OP when I floated my DD's name on here eight years ago I was slated, told she would be teased etc. She isn't teased, and people always tell me how much they love her name. Anyone who doesnt like it has had the decency to keep quiet!

GummyGoddess · 06/05/2018 19:50

@Belphegor Sadly that isn't true. I was asked by one of the workers at our family centre what my DC was called while they were doing the social round chats. I told her and she said "What a horrible name, I don't like that" Shock

Belphegor · 06/05/2018 20:04

@GummyGoddess I was talking about my own experience. But that is a horrible thing to say!

MissCherryCakeyBun · 06/05/2018 22:17

Please don't name your child after a military base in Afghanistan which is sadly the final resting place of many brave men and women. After all would you name a child Somme or Yvpres ? You need to think things through on how they impact others who may meet your child who have lost relatives there

spatchcock · 07/05/2018 03:44

"You need to think things through on how they impact others who may meet your child who have lost relatives there"

Sorry but that's ridiculous. If you're going by word association, off the top of my head that also rules out Sandy (Hook), or Paris, or Timothy (McVeigh). I'm sure just about any name you can think of you can find negative associations!

OtterInDisgrace · 07/05/2018 03:46

Oh I watched Game Night the other night and Jesse Plemons’ dog was called Bastian. How cute, I thought. Not sure for a child though!

FixItUpChappie · 07/05/2018 04:42

I have always loved the name Bastion ever since I was a kid and saw The Neverending Story. I think it's lovely, uncommon but not too unusual.

How about Fuq-uer? K'unth?

Pregnancy hormones OP. We all did it.

Harebellmeadow · 07/05/2018 07:26

Bastian is a continental shortform for Sebastian. A perfectly normal name.

These name boards are getting more and more narrow minded. I have stopped posting my names to discuss since they are not Finn and Olivia or Sophie or Jack. I used to love the mumsnet name discussions, it used to be enlightening and fun.

Mrsknackered · 07/05/2018 08:45

I seriously dislike it. Sebastian is alright.

Sorry!

Mrsknackered · 07/05/2018 08:46

I do actually know a baby recently born called Bastian though, it’s definitely not as weird as it seems to be implied above^

WellySocksBox · 07/05/2018 08:50

And it’s a bastard from me too.

PintOfMineralWater · 07/05/2018 09:03

@Hareballmeadow totally agree. Posters on here are particularly sneery. Especially about names from other cultures. Bastian is a normal, pretty popular name in a few parts of Europe.

ALostCause · 07/05/2018 09:15

I know a Bastian, it suits him and I never would have thought of 'bastard'! I think names that are unusual can take a bit of time for some to get used to but when someone has a name, it tends to 'fit' them.

calzone · 07/05/2018 09:16

Yuck

sonnyboo · 07/05/2018 10:00

Bastian is a normal, pretty popular name in a few parts of Europe.

Yes, because in those languages it has no similarity to bastard!

PintOfMineralWater · 07/05/2018 19:35

"Yes, because in those languages it has no similarity to bastard!"

Of course it does.

spatchcock · 07/05/2018 20:56

"Yes, because in those languages it has no similarity to bastard!"

Confused Bastian is Latin. Bastard comes from Latin. Need I spell out the basis of most European languages ...?

Shampaincharly · 07/05/2018 20:58

No. Will be called Bastard.

kirta · 07/05/2018 21:16

I knew a Dutch Bastian. He was a pilot. And absolutely gorgeous! I quite like it! Smile

sonnyboo · 07/05/2018 22:08

German is not a Latin language and bastard has no meaning whatsoever.

So Bastian is just a name!

cloudtree · 07/05/2018 22:13

It may well be the main name from the Never ending story but that is a german book by a german author and as pp have mentioned the difference is that Bastian does not sound like the german word for bastard.

sonnyboo · 07/05/2018 22:43

*Yes, because in those languages it has no similarity to bastard!"

Of course it does.*

Really, what word does Bastian sound like in German?

PintOfMineralWater · 08/05/2018 00:00

Why are you focussing on German? It's also a name in Spanish-speaking countries that have a Latin root.

LuluLozenge · 08/05/2018 00:10

Ohh I love this name! Name of a long-ago ex. As far as I know he was not called "bastard" in the schoolyard but we weren't in the UK, (another English speaking country though). The UK is weird/snobby about names as this thread shows.
