So I have a Caoimhe (keeva, we are in Ulster so correct pronunciation for here), looking girls names, what should I be shortlisting!

Open to all ideas.

So far on my list is Fiadh but dh is not fussed

We had previously short listed Laoise but not sure if I love it anymore.

This reminds me of Catastrophe when Rob can't pronounce his DD's name (Muireanne)

Agustarella · 06/05/2018 00:11

"Alana
Allanah
Macuisle ( my sweetheart / darling )"

Like the songs Eileen Alannah and Macushla? I like those, but are they 'real' names? (Genuine question from a curious English person, not criticism.) Very romantic names anyway, and sort of Edwardian. A bit like my late great granny who was called Kathleen, though I don't think any of our family were actually Irish.

Inkspellme · 06/05/2018 00:20

Liadán

I know someone else mentioned it earlier ...

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 06/05/2018 00:24

Fallon. Aileen. Bridget. Oonagh. Roision.

Inkspellme · 06/05/2018 00:29

Alanna is said to come from “a with leanbh” which translates to “ah child” - best described as meaning “my darling child”.

Macuisle comes from pulse. The phrase that springs to mind to “mo chuisle mo chroí” which means “pulse of my heart”.

Agustarella · 06/05/2018 00:31

Thank you Inkspellme!

applesandpears56 · 06/05/2018 00:37

Its not Irish but Elouise

mathanxiety · 06/05/2018 01:11

Agustarella - no, they are not real names.

They are like Colleen, derived from 'cailín' which means 'girl'. What better name to call a daughter Hmm.

Eileen Alannah would be 'Eileen, my darling' ("a Eibhlín, a leanbh" in speech).

Agustarella · 06/05/2018 01:18

@ mathanxiety Aha, I knew about Colleen but not the others! Is mo chroí the same as Machree, as in 'Mother Machree'? Not that anyone's suggested it as a name of course.

mathanxiety · 06/05/2018 01:30

'Mo chroí' ('machree) is 'my heart'

I have actually come across a MNer whose DD has Croí as a middle name. I think it's beautiful as a name. Like Corazón in Spanish.

Agustarella · 06/05/2018 02:27

That's very interesting mathanxiety. I wonder if Croí has religious connotations like Corazon.

mathanxiety · 06/05/2018 08:48

I don't think it does. The Sacred Heart is usually commemorated by the name Margaret Mary in Ireland, a combo that you don't hear very much any more. (St Margaret Mary of the Sacred Heart).

eloisesparkle · 06/05/2018 16:41

Darerca.
The patron saint of Valentia Island, Kerry apparently.
And with Star Wars/ Skelligs/ Portmagee / Valentia Island linkage it might become popular.
Rerky as a nn ?

Pebblespony · 06/05/2018 18:52

She's guaranteed, even in Kerry, to be the only Darerca in her class.

TheChineseChicken · 06/05/2018 18:56

I don't know anything about Irish names (and this probably isn't even one so no offence intended if it isn't!) but I love Romola, as in Romola Garai

eloisesparkle · 06/05/2018 19:18

Pebbles I said it might become popular Grin
It's miles better than Gobnait

WomanEqualsAdultHumanFemale · 06/05/2018 19:34

Darerca is lovely!

Pebblespony · 06/05/2018 21:08

Gobnait is a tough one alright. Shortened to Gobby in someone I know!

mathanxiety · 07/05/2018 01:47

I know one who (1) now calls herself Gabby, and (2) left the country.

Amalfimamma · 07/05/2018 02:23

Bláthnaid
Áine
Cadhla
Grainne

IWouldLikeToKnow · 07/05/2018 02:35

What about Doireann ? Haven't see that mentioned yet

bebehen · 07/05/2018 11:55

My Irish baby girlname list is:

Sadhbh
Siofra
Siomha
Beibhinn (I say Beh-vin)
Doireann
Neasa
Aodhemar

Should we have a girl, the name is coming from this list :)
I also love Fiadh!! But know someone using it

Hope you find something you love as much as Caoimhe!

MacaroonMama · 07/05/2018 21:24

Regarding the discussion above, my name is Cushla! So it is a real name! (In as much as it is mine Smile)

My dad is Irish. My parents liked Macuislé (sorry if fada wrong way round) but liked Cuislé better then because we live in England, they used a phonetic spelling.

So, Cushla. I hated it at school when you had to find out the meaning - Sarah was ‘princess’, Clare was ‘light’ - and I was ‘pulse of my heart’... Love it now though. Have never met another one.

whywhywhywhywhyyy · 07/05/2018 21:26

Dearbhail is an interesting one I heard lately

confuddledconfuddle · 07/05/2018 22:29

@bebehen how do you pronounce Aodhemar?

I can't use Siomhe with Caoimhe right hahah I do like the name aghh

So far a shortened list of about 4 - none I LOVE but I'm going to keep reading them everyday and hopefully they will start to grow on me. I think it's difficult as I have Caoimhe to look at and love so I also love her with the name. So I am not going to love another name as much as Caoimhe until Baby is here and named am I?

Caoimhe didn't get her name until she was 2 days old after all
