So I have a Caoimhe (keeva, we are in Ulster so correct pronunciation for here), looking girls names, what should I be shortlisting!

Open to all ideas.

So far on my list is Fiadh but dh is not fussed

We had previously short listed Laoise but not sure if I love it anymore.

I would pronounce it be-vin

strawberryblondebint · 05/05/2018 19:46

I have a Caoimhe and her little sister is Maebh.

WomanEqualsAdultHumanFemale · 05/05/2018 20:04

Be-vin as in bee- vin?

PinkbicyclesinBerlin · 05/05/2018 20:07

No woman bev in.

WomanEqualsAdultHumanFemale · 05/05/2018 20:11

Yes I know, I was asking gwen how she is pronouncing.

mathanxiety · 05/05/2018 20:27

Beibhinn doesn't have a fada iirc. It's 'Bevin', rhyming with Kevin. With a fada it would be Bay-vinn.

Mo chuisle ('macushla') is 'my pulse', so 'something essential to my life' is what is conveyed in the endearment.

Eavan is 'Ee-vun' as in the poet Eavan Boland but I know one who is A-vun (short A) to rhyme with Cavan and another who pronounces it E-vun (short E). I would pronounce it E-vun if choosing the name. Afaik it's an anglicised version of Aoibheann.

WomanEqualsAdultHumanFemale · 05/05/2018 20:32

Yes there is a fada on the e in Béibhinn.

mathanxiety · 05/05/2018 20:52

Thank you for the clarification. In that case it's Bay-vinn.

confuddledconfuddle · 05/05/2018 21:07

I liked Bay veen pronunciation but I think in Ulster a lot of people would say bev in. My dh turned me of it saying people would shorten it to bev

I found these websites which are full of Irish names. I struggle a bit with some of the pronunciations in my Ulster accent but maybe that’s just me reading them in english brain.

I know of a Caoimhe whose older sister is Aoife. I also like Deirbhile, Órlaith and Róisín.

There is no i in it, but there is a fada, and is Bay-veen

Sorry I posted too quick.. I will just say as much as I ADORE Aoife (I have one myself) It will be too close in pronunciation to Caoimhe You get the EEEEAAA sound on both names... I have 2 dd's with seemingly very different names but both have pronounced EEEE AAA sounds so you get them both going " did you mean me?"

Sophronia · 05/05/2018 23:21

I know a Tailte and a Briege.

EightdaysaweekIloveu · 05/05/2018 23:28

We can all pronounce them, they are easy. Do you mean that you can't pronounce?

StairPillar · 05/05/2018 23:52

I would have said Aisling, but you don't like it. I think Róusín is beautiful also.

WomanEqualsAdultHumanFemale · 05/05/2018 23:53

And yet a whole nation pronounces them on a daily basis.

If you need help with pronunciation, just ask. New languages can be hard. There’s no shame in asking for help.

WomanEqualsAdultHumanFemale · 05/05/2018 23:54

Róusín?
