I'm expecting boy/girl twins and these are our current favourites. What do you think of them? Any other suggestions are gladly welcomed Smile

It’s Russian nn

Pasha for Pavel
Misha for Mikhail
Alyosha for Alexei

Seraphina?
Clementine?

spritethecat · 28/04/2018 21:37

Sasha is same principle as Alexander/Sasha. Maybe it doesn't seem too contrived to me because I know a Lysander/Sasha. Like I said, I haven't planned nicknames for my children because I think they happen if they will happen.

I hadn't remembered that Lysander was also in Harry Potter. I guess not a major character, but still I think any other HP name with Hermione would be a bit much.

Is Lysander and Aurelia better?

Yes, Sasha is typically a diminutive of Alexander/Aleksandr/Alexandra/Aleksandra.

GorgonLondon · 28/04/2018 22:00

What impression are you hoping to create with those names, op?

dementedma · 28/04/2018 22:04

are you Jilly Cooper?

spritethecat · 28/04/2018 22:07

I'm not trying to create any impression other than that I like the names.

Can you imagine calling those names across the park?

They are too much for me.

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 28/04/2018 22:09

Lysander is too... no

Grin

^^This!

GothMummy · 28/04/2018 22:10

Love Lysander, and it was on my list of boys names. I also thought that you had mistyped Hermia though! I have a daughter named after a character from a Shakespeare play too.

applesandpears56 · 28/04/2018 22:11

Lysander is too jilly cooper

Hermione Nice

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 28/04/2018 22:11

Could there BE a more mimsy name than Lysander?

Yes: Crispin. But it's pretty close.

applesandpears56 · 28/04/2018 22:11

No Tarquin surely!!

GorgonLondon · 28/04/2018 22:13

I'm not trying to create any impression other than that I like the names.

If that's really true, I think you should go back to the drawing board. Because those names create a very strong impression of a parent who's trying very hard indeed.

TatianaLarina · 28/04/2018 22:15

Lysander was originally a Spartan general - (and also a WW2 plane) couldn’t be much less mimsy than that.

GothMummy · 28/04/2018 22:16

I know a lot of children in my circle with similar sounding names and my own DCs are too. We are normal, my friends are normal and none if the children are teased because of their names. If anything, with such a diverse cultural mix where we live its usual to hear such a wide variety of names I don't think Hermione and Lysander would warrent raised eyebrows.

GorgonLondon · 28/04/2018 22:18

And Derek originally meant 'gifted king' or 'people ruler'. You wouldn't name your son it, though.

TatianaLarina · 28/04/2018 22:31

People do though.

In the U.K. it was mega popular at one time and is now very dated, but not so in the US.

spritethecat · 28/04/2018 22:55

I'm a bit surprised by the strength of some of the reactions. I know children with names like Lysander, Persephone, Balthazar, Ariadne, Seraphina, and I'm not posh, just normal.

I was wanting something a little offbeat, but I don't want people to hear my children's names and think trying to create some impression of myself that I'm not and I definitely don't want them to be judged for it.

Lysander: Riders by Jilly Cooper (I think)
Hermione: Harry Potter.

Pretentious, in any case.

Theworldisfullofgs · 28/04/2018 23:02

Both are Jilly Cooper characters....

Freyanna · 28/04/2018 23:02

I like Aurelia, very pretty.

flumpybear · 28/04/2018 23:04

Defo jilly cooper for me ... which is ok but a bit telling of what you're in to literature wise

RedDwarves · 28/04/2018 23:06

True posh people name their children things like Sarah, Sophie, Edward, Elizabeth, James, Samuel etc. not Persephone, Balthazar etc. which is why people are saying it seems like you're trying too hard. They are the sorts of names people choose when they want to convey the impression of being posh, but without realising that those names aren't remotely posh, they're simply pretentious.

Cyberworrier · 28/04/2018 23:12

Lysander and Aurelia sounds lovely
