I love the name Gwen; DH is not so keen and says it's too short. DD1 has a fairly unusual 4 syllable name, so I can see where he's coming from. Can anyone think of any names that can have Gwen as a nickname? Baby's not due for a few months and it may not even be a girl, but I'm fixating on this!

We're Welsh/Cornish, so names from those origins would be especially good (I speak Welsh and he wants 'Llywelyn' for a boy, so hardcore Welsh names are fine!)

Gwen is short for Gwendolen is it not? Would that work?

Gwenllian and Gwenno are lovely. There's Gwenhwyfar too. I also like Gwendoline.

I love Gwen! I also loved Llewelyn, but my husband's family couldn't pronounce it. We couldn't have Gwen due to our surname beginning with G.

Gwendolyn and Guinevere are the obvious ones. I don’t know if any others. Maybe Genevieve sat a stretch. Oh yeah and Gwyneth, as in Paltrow.

UnconsideredTrifles · 09/04/2018 21:56

Thank you all! I love Gwenllian, DH is proving very stubborn about it all and objecting to everything except Eleanor.

I really want to like Gwendoline (in all its various spellings!), but I can't get past Gwendoline from Malory Towers, otherwise it would be the perfect name since it's a family one too. Anyone know of any other famous/literary Gwendolens to change my mind on this?

Gwenelope?

Rhymes with Penelope?

snidgetowl · 09/04/2018 22:06

My DSis is called Gwenllian and it's often abbreviated to 'Gwen' by non Welsh speakers. Gwenno is also lovely.
I know a Gwenfair, Gweneira and Gwenlli as well, which are more unusual, but beautiful.

The painter Gwen John. Augustus John's sister.

I knew a Gwenog once but I don’t think it’s the prettiest use to get the shortening of Gwen.

How about Gwenbeth or Amygwen or Gwenrose - I’ve no idea if they’re “real” names, I just fudged together Gwen with other names that are pretty to see what came out but I think they’re actually very useable

UnconsideredTrifles · 09/04/2018 22:25

snidgetowl Gweneira is beautiful! I will try it with DH later.

DanceDisaster My grandma's middle name was Gwendoline (or one of the other spellings, I'll have to check...) and she was lovely too! It's odd how one character in a series I haven't read in...20 years (yikes) can have such a profound effect.

Gwenlli -is that not a boy’s name?

DH’s GM was a Gwenllian but decidedly too tricky for non-Welsh speakers we felt.

I love Gwendolyn personally. Gwenfair is lovely too, or Guinevere/Gwynhwyfar are unusual and classic.

MargotMoon · 09/04/2018 22:29

First thing I thought of was Gwendolyn Mary and I haven't read MT for over 30 years but Gwen is such a beautiful name you should not let it put you off. Just resolve not to let her resemble her namesake Smile
