I love the name Gwen; DH is not so keen and says it's too short. DD1 has a fairly unusual 4 syllable name, so I can see where he's coming from. Can anyone think of any names that can have Gwen as a nickname? Baby's not due for a few months and it may not even be a girl, but I'm fixating on this!

We're Welsh/Cornish, so names from those origins would be especially good (I speak Welsh and he wants 'Llywelyn' for a boy, so hardcore Welsh names are fine!)

If you like the ‘wen’ sound, and your DH likes a bit more trad English like Eleanor, have you considered Anwen?

LittleRedTerfette · 09/04/2018 22:30

How about GwendolineMaryLacey?

TatianaLarina · 09/04/2018 22:32

Gwenhwyfar.

MikeUniformMike · 09/04/2018 22:38

Gwen is a name in it's own right and is quite nice.
Gwenaëlle (Breton, I think.)
Gwenan (not Gwennan)
Gwenith (it means wheat)
Gwenffrewi (welsh for Winifred)
Gwenno (there's a singer with this name)
Gwenhwyfar (welsh Guinivere.. The Cornish is Jennifer)
Gweneira (Snow White)
Gwenllian (a welsh warrior princess had this name)
Gwenfair (Blessed + Mary)
Gwennol (a swallow)

Gwyneth would shorten to Gwyn, and Gwyn is a boy's name. I don't like Gweneth or Gwenyth - they seem a bit made up.
There's a river Gwenffrwd.

I like Llywelyn.

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 09/04/2018 22:45

Also can’t get over the Gwendoline Mallory Towers connection!!

Love Gwen so much though!

MikeUniformMike · 09/04/2018 22:54

Gwenllian has a diaeresis (sp?) so is really Gwenllïan to get the 3 syllables (Gwen LLI an).
Gwenlliant doesn't.

Should have said I love Llywelyn, with that spelling, and I like the short form Llew too.

Gwenelope is quite good Grin

dicdicnurse · 09/04/2018 22:58

I have a Gwen so obviously love the name. We call her a few variations but mainly Gwenny Smile

LoveInTokyo · 10/04/2018 11:11

I know a Gwenaëlle and a Gwenola.

Why not call her (Something) Gwendolen with Gwendolen as the middle name and then use Gwen as the nickname?

Or if you love Gwen and your husband loves Eleanor, how do you feel about Ellen?

Marcipex · 10/04/2018 12:17

Gweneira looks pretty.
Is it pronounced Gwen eera or Gwen eye ra?
Surely any little girl would love to be called Snow White.

LoveInTokyo · 10/04/2018 12:30

Oh yes, Gweneira is lovely.

NoSquirrels · 10/04/2018 12:32

Gweneira = Gwen eye ra

I also love Eirlis = snowdrop

FizzyGreenWater · 10/04/2018 13:06

Gwenllian is the best.

Winterfield · 10/04/2018 16:56

Gwenore? It’s got a bit of Eleanor about it too.

MikeUniformMike · 11/04/2018 08:11

Gweneira is said somewhere between Gwen-AY-ra and Gwen-EEra/
Gwenore doesn't work because it would be said as Gwen-O-ray. Gwenrose doesn't work for the same reason. Gwendolen is Gwen-DOL-en but would get said by some as Gwendolyn.

Snowdrop is Eirlys not Eirlis.
Gwen is the feminine form of white or blessed so Gwenlli is probably female.

Gwenan is dated but reasonably popular. Gweneth is made up (although I do know one and she's not nice), it's Gwyneth. Gwenda is very dated.

Gwenllian is lovely but the LL will cause pronunciation issues. The stress is on the lli part. Gwen-LLI-an.

Peth (mutates to Beth) is Thing in welsh. Beth is What. You still get girls called Beth and Bethan.

Gwenci is stoat and Gwenwyn is poison, so probably best to avoid those.

FizzyGreenWater · 11/04/2018 10:27

Gwenelope or...

Gwenebella

Gwenabel

Gwenodora

Gwennifer

Gwenita

Gwenerelda

Gwenivia

Thank you, lovely lovely people. There are some beautiful suggestions here (and some that made me splutter a bit...)

I was trying to convince DH (and myself) of Gwendolen, then dropped Gweneira into the conversation randomly. DH LIKES IT! We have a winner. Very appropriate given the weather we've had recently, and the fact that I get overly excited by snow.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to give ideas - now, of course, this baby will be a boy!

Gwendoline or Gwenno are my favourites :)

iffyjiffybag · 17/04/2018 17:11

I once met a Gwenbyth, it's a lovely name.

LoveInTokyo · 17/04/2018 17:56

Love it! Well done OP, hope it all goes well. Smile

MikeUniformMike · 17/04/2018 20:10

A boy could be Gwyn.

sakura06 · 17/04/2018 21:01

Gweneira is lovely!
