Name like Lorcan?

Expecting baby in a few weeks Shock and just can't quite pin down a boy's name, or even strong contenders. One we have thought of that we almost love is Lorcan. We like the Celtic feel, two syllables and unusual nature, just not quite sure about it. Is it harsh sounding?

We are Up North, Scottish/Irish/American backgrounds, our current DC has Irish-y style name.

Our surname is very, very common and begins with an S so we are trying to go a little more unsual with the first name to balance it out.

Any suggestions gratefully received! Or should we just stick with Lorcan?

I like Lorcan, but I do think Lucan, like the murderer. Sorry

I like Lorcan, and also Lachlan as suggested above.

Lorcan is a fabulous name and was always high on our list. That 'associating it with Lord Lucan' comment gets the silly prize. Don't for a moment let that deter you. It's a great name. I'd stick with it.

Lorcan makes me think of Peter O'Toole's gorgeous son!

Naoise (pronounced Nee-sha)

Oh and also Alec (the Scottish diminutive of Alexander).

Also amazed at the Lorcan/Lucan comment. Daftness personified.

Lovely suggestions! Thank you. Will continue pondering. Just can't wait to meet the wee one.

I like it. Made me think of Lorcan Cranitch, the actor.

I've been hearing Rogan recently, which I like. It's from an Irish surname. Manages to be cute for baby/toddler but strong for an adult too.

Clarabell33 · 09/04/2018 13:46

A friend has a Lochlan (definitely o, not a as I first thought!). They're Scottish/Irish.

BringMeCoffeePlease · 09/04/2018 13:49

I much prefer Lachlan (nickname Locky) OP. Lorcan does sound very harsh sounding.

pipilangstrumpf · 09/04/2018 15:53

Lorcan is nice or how about Quentin or Roman?

mummabubs · 09/04/2018 16:09

Would you consider Larsen? (Scandinavian name that can shorten to Lars). We went with a Scandinavian name for our boy 5 months ago as we also wanted a name that was a little different but not made up if that makes sense, we found that we loved Scandinavian names despite both of us being English!

That 'associating it with Lord Lucan' comment gets the silly prize.

It’s a joint prize in that case, because my brain made that association too.

bespokeceremoniesuk · 09/04/2018 19:48

As a celebrant I come across some unusual names at wedding ceremonies which can be amusing. I also experience them at baby namings. PEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE think carefully when naming your baby. A quirky name might seem funny or cute, but think about the child at school - will he/she thank you? I do like Lorcan though.

fourpawswhite · 09/04/2018 19:51

I also have a friend with a lochlan, love both lochlan and Lachlan

Every second late teen girl in my (Scottish) town is named Lennox after a late 90s fad for the name.

DramaAlpaca · 09/04/2018 20:17

I love Lorcan.

My autocorrect doesn't though, I had to type it three times before it did what it was told.
