Mabel vs Mabli

So basically me and OH want to name our daughter the same name essentially I just want to use the welsh version (i’m welsh OH is English) my question is would it be weird to put Mabel on the BC but for me to call her Mabli as a kind of nickname? That way we will both be happy? Bit contrived?

That sounds like a really good compromise!

missmouse101 · 31/03/2018 17:38

Not at all! Sounds a perfect idea and sweet nickname.

Dapplegrey · 31/03/2018 17:38

Sounds great.
Mable is a wonderful name - I wish we'd called our daughter that.

Dapplegrey · 31/03/2018 17:39

Sorry - Mabel

villainousbroodmare · 31/03/2018 17:40

I much much much prefer Mabli.

Magpie24 · 31/03/2018 17:44

Sounds good to me! I really want Mabel but OH doesn't like it.

Sophronia · 31/03/2018 17:52

I think that’s a nice idea.

Beeziekn33ze · 31/03/2018 18:04

OP Lovely, not contrived at all!

BertrandRussell · 31/03/2018 18:06

That’s a brilliant compromise.

Iplaythetriangle · 31/03/2018 18:54

Thank you everyone! I love Mumsnet for it’s brutal honesty and the fact that no one has said I’m daft has made me confident in this decision! And OH says I never let him win 😉

I think that's a perfect compromise - especially if you'll be speaking Welsh to baby at home 😊

Glumglowworm · 31/03/2018 19:00

That’s a great compromise

Mabel will probably travel better outside of Wales if she grows up and moves away. She can always choose to be known as Mabli everywhere if that’s what she prefers

RidingWindhorses · 31/03/2018 19:02

Much prefer Mabli.

Mabel is a deeply dowdy, unstylish name.

moomoo85 · 31/03/2018 19:07

I think Mabel is a lovely name and using the welsh version as a nickname is a good compromise

daisypond · 31/03/2018 19:44

I think Mabli is so much nicer than Mabel, which I think is awful. It'll date badly, which Mabli probably won't - depending on how Mabli is regarded by Welsh speakers.

Kittykatmacbill · 31/03/2018 20:30

Please call your child the same thing as on her birth certificate, I have a ‘real’ name as a nick name and it drives me loopy.

Both mabli and Mabel are lovely but just pick one!

RapunzelIsHere · 31/03/2018 23:53

I don’t like Mabli. I would definitely use Mabel on the birth certificate, but it would be reasonable for you to use Mabli as a nickname.

Dixiestampsagain · 01/04/2018 00:32

I would definitely just call her Mabli if that’s what she will be known as. It’s not particularly ‘out there’ as a name- I know quite a few (but, admittedly, all in Wales).

SingingMouse · 01/04/2018 18:57

Do you say Mabli like it looks, Mab - Lee?

Is so it's much nicer than Mabel, but I hate the trend for fusty old lady names.

Iplaythetriangle · 02/04/2018 10:53

Thank you. My daughter has an ‘old lady’ name with a quirky nickname so I think this goes quite well. I don’t call my daughter the name on her BC but her grandparents (OH parents) do and I feel it gives her more options when she’s older. Appreciate all the comments. Have read through them with OH and have decided to go for it.

Mabel is a much nicer name. I would definitely go with that for the bc name. Mabli is quite 'clunky' but kind of cute as a nickname.

TatianaLarina · 02/04/2018 13:08

Mabel is ghastly. I’d be furious if I were named this.

Mabli great though.

DullAndOld · 02/04/2018 13:10

Mabel is a superb name, Tatiana, how very dare you say that it's 'ghastly'? Grin OK - I confess my grandmother was called Mabel.

Mabli is great too, so she will have two cool names...

TatianaLarina · 02/04/2018 13:23

I think it would suit a grandma very well Grin

DullAndOld · 02/04/2018 13:24

Grin if she were still alive she would be 117....
