So basically me and OH want to name our daughter the same name essentially I just want to use the welsh version (i’m welsh OH is English) my question is would it be weird to put Mabel on the BC but for me to call her Mabli as a kind of nickname? That way we will both be happy? Bit contrived?

😂😂 I don’t mind if people don’t like it. I wasn’t asking that I was just asking if the nickname was appropriate, which most people seem to think it is, so happy enough with that. Thanks for all the responses though :)

I like mabel, how are you pronouncing mabli? Is it may- blee?

squoosh · 02/04/2018 19:32

Mabel is ghastly. I’d be furious if I were named this.

God, yeah. Me too!

Furry Mabel above is a beauty though, and no doubt very happy with her name.

Mabel good, Mabli looks unfinished.

My parents did that virtually the same name but slightly different. E.g. Birth certificate was Anna but they called me Anne. Completely unnecessary and a long term inconvenience that has followed me into adulthood. Very awkward when social circles mix. E. G. When someone from the kids school meets someone who I know purely socially or a family member meets some one from work. Lots of-sorry, did you mean Anne?

Iplaythetriangle · 02/04/2018 19:51

HoHo it’s pronounced Mab-Lee

My Mum had a very common or garden name which sounds lovely in French and looks lovely when written in French. Which is what her parents did. This is pre WWII/not in the Uk .
It shocked people (including me) when I found out what her real name was. Ace idea, op.
