Forgot to say that Vera is Russian for Faith and one of the nicest, most beautiful women I ever met was called Vera but I still find it hard to shake the Corrie connections.

formerbabe · 01/04/2018 12:57

Irene is awful...

I don't mind the others.

I especially like Audrey, Sylvia and Norah.

Shipshapeit · 01/04/2018 13:00

Sylvia is nice and so is alma.

Freyanna · 01/04/2018 13:14

I don't like any of them.

I think most of these names are already back, though they may not have hit the mass market yet. I know babies, toddlers and even a very few much older ones in their teens called all of these names - except Rita or June. I don't know either of those. I particularly love Marion, Irene, Vera, Audrey and Sylvia.

Agustarella · 01/04/2018 18:42

I think Sylvia is the nicest, and Silvia looks better. Irene (I prefer the Eirene spelling) and Vera have ugly pronunciations in English, and it might confuse people if Irene had three syllables or Vera rhymed with Sarah. Audrey and Marion are not pretty names IMO but sound classy and assertive. Rita and Peggy sound a bit "common" as independent names. Alma, June, why not. Hazel is meh.

Uniglo18 · 01/04/2018 19:01

I like them all but I prefer the Arabic Nouriyah (light) instead of Norah.

Uniglo18 · 01/04/2018 19:02

Norah reminds me of Norah Batty Grin Nouriyah is classier and means light, illumination.

thegreylady · 01/04/2018 19:04

Dorothy is lovely and it has already come back! I know several very young ones.

Agustarella · 01/04/2018 19:15

@Uniglo18 Don't, I saw a re-run of Last of the Summer Wine recently and I was struck by how relatively youthful the cast looked! I remember them seeming like Methuselah, back in the day. Nora(h) to me is the song The Pride of Kildare as well as Ms Batty. Two very 'retro' references there, but that's not necessarily bad for the lovers of granny chic names!

Uniglo18 · 01/04/2018 19:22

Agustarella Aah Compo & Norah Batty! Easter Grin those were the days!

RuthW · 01/04/2018 21:19

I have come across a baby Dorothy, Marion and Freda recently.

Irene - Yes, totally ready.
Alma - No, but I think Alba is totally ready.
Marion - NO
Vera - Yep, think this one is gaining in popularity already.
Peggy - I hope not.
June - No, waaaaay too dated.
Frida - Maybe as an alternative to the newly popular Freya.
Dorothy - I totally think this name should be more popular than it is, but people seem to see it as dated still.
Norah - Yep, this name is starting to rise in popularity again.
Audrey - Yep
Sylvia - Sylvie seems to be getting popular but not Sylvia.
Rita - Hahah, no
Hazel - No, too plain.

mathanxiety · 02/04/2018 05:24

Irene - depends on pronunciation. Eye-reen, no. Eye-REEN-ee - nice imo
Alma - no
Marion - will be back
Vera - already back
Peggy - NO
June - already back
Frida - should make a comeback - great name imo (though never uber popular to begin with)
Dorothy - dowdy imo
Norah - prefer without the H but v popular where I am
Audrey - goes with Margot, imo, which is back
Sylvia - already back
Rita - should make a comeback
Hazel - already back

TheDowagerCuntess · 02/04/2018 05:50

You have your finger on the pulse, OP.

Some of these are already coming back, otherwise will be soon. And it's always good to be ahead of the curve.

One of DD (7)'s friends is Silvia, if that spelling holds any interest for you.
