As pp said - Corrie in the 80s!
Much prefer Sylvie to Sylvia.

myrtleWilson · 31/03/2018 00:17

oh - I'd also add Gloria to the list of hipsterish names!

Movablefeast · 31/03/2018 00:22

I know a Slyvia who is about 10 or 11. So already back.

Movablefeast · 31/03/2018 00:23

Joan and Jean are already back too. Hanging out with all the Ivies I expect!

Movablefeast · 31/03/2018 00:25

Wake me up when Louise, Lorna and Mandy become hip again.

ChocolateCrunch · 31/03/2018 03:59

I like Dorothy, Norah and Audrey. Similar names - Margaret, Kathleen, Betty, Eileen, Doris, Olive.

Cavender · 31/03/2018 04:05

I’m surprised by all the Alma love, I can never get past Alma Pudden from St Clare’s.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 31/03/2018 05:21

Are you giving birth to an 80 year old woman?

Itscolderoutside · 31/03/2018 06:55

If you like Sylvia but are not sure, how about Lydia. I think it has the uplifting feel due to the 'ia', a bit more timeless and never super popular.

The others in your list all seem a bit leaden to me.

Justfred · 31/03/2018 06:55

Well she'll be 80 in 80 years! I love Hazel from that list, it's on my list too.

What about Thea or Beatrix

Madmarchpear · 31/03/2018 07:00

Frida is ace!

TheJoyOfSox · 31/03/2018 07:04

Tbh I don’t like any of them. There are some lovely old names,
Daisy
Charlotte
Emily
Victoria
Elizabeth
But the Maude, Doris and Ruby types don’t do it for me, not on paper.
Probably better for me when I see the baby the name belongs too in person.

ReversingSnail · 31/03/2018 07:53

Alma, Dorothy and Sylvia are my fave 3 of the list.

Dogsrbarking · 31/03/2018 07:56

I know a toddler/baby June, Dorothy, Frida and have come across a 3 Sylvia/Sylvies at playgroups. Personally I can't say I'm a fan of any of the names you have listed, sorry.

I suppose Rita may become more popular due to Rita Ora.

Shirley
Maureen
Roslyn
Jean
Jeanette
Michelle
Diane
Susan

Are of a similar ilk (I've basically just names all my mums friends....)

worstwitch18 · 31/03/2018 08:00

All well known names although I consider Peggy a nickname.

My favourites on the list are:

Irene
Vera
June
Dorothy
Audrey
Sylvia

Some of the others I can't image on anyone under 75! But of course when you meet a child with the name that perception changes.

pilates · 31/03/2018 08:19

The only one I sort of like is Sylvia but prefer Sylvie.

The others are truly dreadful.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 31/03/2018 08:24

I like Marion, Rita and Hazel.
Other names with a similar vibe,
Muriel
Blanche
Lydia
Eunice
Stella
Blythe

Naberes · 31/03/2018 09:50

I love Peggy, Frida and Hazel.

Daphne
Greta
Margot
Bridie
Vita
Vivien
Sylvie
Ida
Jean
Betty
Dora
Joanie
Mavis
Winnie
Helen
Valerie
Hedy
Judy
Trudie
Della
Susie
Olive
Edith
Mary
Winifred

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 31/03/2018 10:29

The only two on your list I like are Norah and June. Although I think June works better as a middle name. Norah June?

hushnowthanks · 01/04/2018 01:37

LOVE Frida - it has such a Scandinavian vibe.

Vera is gorgeous name too. Have you considered it with an ‘h’ on th end, imo it gives the name quite a modern touch.

Littlemum2be86 · 01/04/2018 09:37

Love Dorothy with nn Dottie Smile

Also think Frida is really cute, Peggy and Norah.

Not too keen on the others.

missmouse101 · 01/04/2018 09:39

Afraid I find them all horrendous, apart from Hazel!

LastNightsMakeUp · 01/04/2018 10:53

Irene - not keen
Alma - could be really nice actually, never considered
Marion - no
Vera - actually love this
Peggy - don't like this variant of Margaret
June - cute
Frida - not keen
Dorothy - too 'old lady' but not in a cool way for me
Norah - bloody Norah?
Audrey - love it
Sylvia - nice
Rita - love it
Hazel - imo a bit bland

stellinaa · 01/04/2018 11:01

Love Audrey, June, Vera and Hazel

Marioki · 01/04/2018 12:51

I'll be honest a lot of them remind m of my mum's gossipy old neighbours but if you like the name it shouldn't put you off.

Having said that, I really lie Hazel. It's pretty, feminine without being too girly, easy to say and spell.
I also quite like Marion, Alma (Hungarian for Apple so that might be worth baring in mind), Norah and Audrey.
