Love this name but family aren't sure on it

Pregnant with DD2. i saw the name Mallory on a site and knew straight away that was the name i wanted. DH agreed, the only issue is mine and his family's don't agree!

I know it's our choice but it still hurts that they don't like the name we've chosen and i don't want to have to listen to snidey comments about it forever! do you guys think that it's a name someone would get teased for having/thought of as a snob for having?

I don't think it's tease-worthy or snobby at all.

Actually, I really like it although have never considered it as a potential name at all. I think it would suit a baby/girl/woman of all ages.

If you and DH both love it, go for it!

Once baby is here and has a name, it's harder to make snide comments, I find. Fairly certain that members of both my and DP's family have had wtf reactions to DS's name, but they were polite enough not to do it openly, as he was here and named! It suits him, and I think it's grown on everybody now!

Mallory is a beautiful name, maybe hold off on talking to family about names until after she's here now? Like you say, it is your and DH's choice, nobody else's

It's a lovely name unless your surname is Towers.

Nice name, and not so widely used that you'll meet a lot of other Mallorys.

I'm not aware of any associations that would make people think "snob" or anything like that. What's not to like?

i wish i hadn't told them and just revealed the name when she's born, and no surname definitely isn't towers! thanks for all the nice comments, we're going to shorten it to mallie anyway and only planning to call her mallory when she's in trouble! but according to DM that's trying to be too fashionable and she's not an accessory we refer to her as mallie even now the name has just stuck and we love it! my ears are shut to their comments from now on

If you and your husband both agree on it. Why do you need your familys' approval.
I don't like my nephews name. I didn't say anything though. I wouldn't dream of passing comment.

@64BooLane they're quite elderly and have said it's not a 'proper' name, although i always think of it as quite an old fashioned name but apparently they've never heard of it!

They'll come round. I found family are prone to not liking names because they kind of want to choose themselves. My mum and sisters in particular disliked both our kids names (very mainstream names) but a few years on they love them.

They had their turn naming babies. It’s nothing to do with them.

I actually tend of think of Mallory as being very American. I like it though. Sounds pretty.

Your baby, your name! I don't happen to like either of my grandsons' names but wouldn't dream of saying so! They will earn to live with Mallory, don't worry.

Not a name I would choose myself but its your dc so you need to choose the name. It doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks.

The only negative connotation I can think of is the Natural Born Killers character. But I think the films definitely old enough that it won't be most people's first thought.

Just try to ignore them, we got loads of negative comments about our dds middle name (as it's not a proper name) just keep repeating "it's not your choice, it's up to me and DH"

It’s your choice OP, not everyone will like any name you chose. I like it btw.

I like it. I know a Mallory, who's now in her early 20s. She's had loads of positive comments about her name. Also uses Mally as a nn.

I really like it, and your nickname "Mallie" too! To me Mallory sounds feminine but not too cutesy and as a pp said will suit a child or an adult.

Ah well, they're wrong in saying it's not a proper name, OP. I hope they come round! They will when they meet the small warm Mallory bundle.

I think the pp who said it was more widely used in America is right - the Mallorys I can think of (only a few over the years, both real and fictional) have been American.

Lovely name. Older generations have a totally different view/ taste on names. Don’t take it to heart, your baby will grow into their name and they will soon get used to it. Only thing I would point out is the meaning of the name isn’t ideal if that would bother you.

We didn't tell ANYONE our name choices when I was pregnant. DM insisted on suggesting names, I just changed the subject. We consistently told everyone that asked that we hadn't decided yet. We weren't interested in anyone else's opinion (our names were mainstream, with normal spellings so no need to ask for opinions on pronunciation etc.)

If you wanted a nn it could indeed be Mallie or Lory (Pronounced Laurie).

Ah, OP, have you looked at the meaning of Mallory? I've just googled it, to see how old it is and it means unlucky/unfortunate (from French). If that kind of thing doesn't bother you then that's fine! Sorry

Your family's reaction is the reason why I would never share my intended name with anyone til it's on the birth certificate. Use the name you want, and tell them to stop being rude.
