What potential quirky baby names could I call my potential DD?

Hi all, I'm a teen who is currently expecting. My baby reveal is in a few months and although I'm fixed on calling my potential DS Matthew, like his father, I have no idea what to call my potential DD! Confused But I want it to be creative and quirky, any ideas?
So far I've got :

  • Oceania
  • Arielle-Sky
-Asia-Mae

Hyphenated -Mae names aren’t quirky.

MamaMilkMachine · 18/03/2018 22:41

You do get some mean comments on here OP try not to let it bother you, if you ask for comments/ideas from people behind a keyboard they don't hold back. Congratulations on your pregnancy, if I was you I would look at names you like the sound of and make up a similar variation of it that you like. That way no one or at least not many people will be called the same. Make sure when it's shortened you still like it too. My daughters name has 4 letters and I thought I would never shorten it but I do....
I like Primrose, prim for short, like from the hunger games.

LoveInTokyo · 18/03/2018 22:44

^ Not as many mean comments as the child will likely get if she is saddled with a stupid name.

CruCru · 18/03/2018 22:46

I'm not very keen on hyphenated names. I know that Oceania is a region but it does rather make me think of the cruise ship Oceana.

What sort of person can you imagine your daughter being? The reason I ask is that one day she will be a 45 year old with a mortgage, partner and children. Ideally the name you give her will work just as well if she runs a company as if she is an artist.

I grew up in Brighton and quite a lot of children had creative / quirky names. This is fine but then it ends up that child called Elizabeth / Mary becomes the one who really stands out.

It's not very nice but quite often a name that seems really unusual and quirky now becomes a bit downmarket in a few years time. This is a shame.

However, if I were thinking of girls' names that were not in the top 20, I might think of:

Pearl
Sorrel
Rosemary
Rosalind
Viola
Alba
Cecilia
Claudia
Flavia
Calliope
Cressida
Petra
Zeta
Lydia
Ingrid
Irene
Evangeline
Callisto

I've read somewhere that hyphenated first names are quickly going out of fashion. They have been very much overused these past couple of years, something-Mae being one of the most popular.
Asia is a pretty name on it's own OP.

I'm still desperately trying to find a girl's name that DH and I agree with. We have a boy's name picked out, but no girl's. It's so hard, isn't it?!

FairyFantastic · 18/03/2018 23:21

Hmm for boys, I like peoples suggestions of names similar to Matthew, seeing as you seem set on it. Matthias is nice but I really really love Matteo. I think it's hard to find quirky boy names but Matteo (Matt-ay-o I think it's pronounced) is nice because of the 'Matt' nickname being relatable. What type of other boys names do you like? Thought of middle names?
I sympathise with some comments about the double-barrelled names. I have a quirky name, and as a kid I hated it. Now I love it, and fortunately haven't suffered. Don't worry about being quirky, OP, as long as the child won't suffer.
Don't forget you can used double barrelled names in the middle. A girl I know has done that quite recently as she loved double names but then couldn't see them age well. E.G. Imogen Ava-Leigh. Of your names I like Mae and the spelling of Mae, I think Asia-Mae could be nice as a middle name or separate. Maeve is also lovely and unusual, I also read that Mattie was actually a girls name used in the 1920s. Other than that I'm not sure I can add to all the other suggestions here! Good luck!

Is Asia pronounced just like the continent? Or is it somehow different?

Have you heard it used as a name? I never have. It seems a bit of a random choice. You could equally choose North-America.

Ariella is nice though. I have only ever come across one in my life so it can't be common.

Trampire · 18/03/2018 23:35

Please don't use Oceania, it was the name of the tackiest nightclub where I live and I believe there was a few around the country.

Bastardingcough · 18/03/2018 23:37

Ariadne
Aderyn (Welsh for bird)
Marlena
Indiana (as long as surname isn't Jones)
Merryn
Luna
Rowena
Phillipa
Emmeline

MandrakeLake · 18/03/2018 23:37

I don't like place or hyphenated names. How about Indigo with Indy as a nickname?

Rainbowqueeen · 18/03/2018 23:43

hey Mandrake I came on to say Indigo!

I agree with all the people who say anything hyphenated with -Mae is extremely popular and something I would steer clear of if you want something unusual or quirky.
Asia by itself is lovely.

Also how about:
Cassidy

Girls: Andromeda, Cosima, Zosia, Rae.

Boys: Jarrah, Phoenix, Tate, Rex.

SharkSave · 19/03/2018 09:58

Agree that anything-mae is far from quirky! Definitely 10 a penny here in kids aged newborn to primary school age.
Personally I think you need to get past the cute thing, you aren't naming a baby, you are naming a person who will eventually be an actual real life adult and may not thank you for calling her something 'cute' when she's 45.
I'm all for unusual names, but not ridiculous ones.

And yes Oceana was a popular nightclub chain until a few years ago, that's all I can think of with Oceania

FloatyFlo · 19/03/2018 10:02

The quirkiest loveliest woman I know named her dd Starr. I love it

dancinghen · 19/03/2018 10:09

Please don't use Oceana. As others have said this was a chain of cheesy/ chavy nightclubs which didn't have the best reputation even if I loved them at 18! Your dd wouldn't know the reference but I bet anyone teaching her would.

LoveInTokyo · 19/03/2018 13:53

As would the parents of her friends if they are in their late 20s/early 30s now.

LoveInTokyo · 19/03/2018 13:54

Makes me think of sticky floors and WKD Blue.
