Still struggling for boys names!

Honest opinions on the name Fletcher for a boy?

OH still not wanting biblical names, and we don't want overly common names, which narrows the choices somewhat!

I like it. It's a little bit different but not too OTT. I know a little Fletcher and it suits him very well.

It's a common surname.

I only know it as a fairly common surname and I dislike surnames used as firstnames - sorry

Thanks everyone. I know it's a surname but in 30 years I've never met anyone with it as their last name so perhaps that's why I feel it's uncommon 😂

I actually know two Fletchers, so it's a normal name to me, though I wouldn't pick it myself. There's Fletcher Christian of the Mutiny on the Bounty fame as well, I suppose.

Norman Stanley (though I guess I'm showing my age). The surname of a good friend.

It doesn't sound very nice really, though - it's got 'lecher' inside it and reminds me too of a flitch of bacon.

Porridge was way before my time so had to actually look this reference up 😂

Could have a brother Godber. Also showing my age.

For the youngers, Norman Stanley Fletcher was Ronnie Barker's character in the prison sitcom Porridge. His cellmate was Godber. It may tickle you to know that the names Fletcher and Godber are, or certainly used to be, commonly used in prison officer training materials.

Also that a feature length Christmas episode was partly shot at HMP Chelmsford while it was closed following a fire.

How about Archer? It's a related job. A fletcher makes the arrows for an archer.

Dislike it as it's another 'occupation' name, like Archer, Carter and Hunter. Daft.

Also, Norman Stanley Fletcher and Porridge. Isn't there a new series of this, with the main character being his grandson or something?

DS's friend is called Fletcher. They all call him Fletch though.

I think it's too much of a surname as mentioned like Carter and Hunter. Don't like them as first names. Sounds too American.

I know a little Fletcher, but am not a fan of occupation/surnames.
