Thoughts on Matthew ?

We are expecting a baby boy in June. I love the name Matthew with either James or George as a middle name. Recently I seen a thread on here with names teachers dread . What do you think when you hear the name Matthew ?

I think it's fine. It doesn't have any particularly strong connotations to me. I think because it used to be such a popular name, you would get boys of all personalities called Matthew. I know a particularly lovely one in his 30s, if that helps?

toolazytobakeacake · 15/03/2018 15:19

One of my favourites. Always makes me picture someone strong and reliable, but not boring.

dancinghen · 15/03/2018 15:21

I used to teach and never dreaded having a Matthew in my class. They were always fairly nice boys. Reasonably bright and popular. It's a sturdy name.

I love Matthew! I think Matthew George sounds perfect Smile

YerAuntFanny · 15/03/2018 15:26

I like it, I would avoid it if you're not a fan of popular names though! There are 3 under 5 in DD's nursery and we have 1 friend in the same age range too so it's popular here atleast.

prettybird · 15/03/2018 15:34

I think it is a lovely name but I might be biased Wink

Afaik, there is only one Matthew in ds' classes. Two Matthews in his rugby team. And this is in Scotland, where it is apparently more common.

Are you ok with the shortenings? Matt - or even Matty. Although the Matthew I know hates being called either (unless it is his aunt, who is allowed to call him Matty Confused)

YerAuntFanny · 15/03/2018 15:36

Prettybird maybe it's regional, I'm in Scotland too and definitely know 4 under 5... We're NE though.

steppemum · 15/03/2018 15:50

I love the name. Might be biased though as it is the name of my lovely cousin.

Interesting that people say it is popular, I haven't come across any small matthews. I know a smattering across the ages, but didn't realise it was back in

itssomewherearoundhere · 15/03/2018 16:06

I love it., especially Matthew George. I work at a prep school although I'm not a teacher. There is only one Matthew, he is a delightful boy with the face of an angel .A look which is not that common among our year 7 boys !

I am in the southeast , he is the only little Matthew I know..

MammieBear · 15/03/2018 16:17

Matthew is lovely, good choice! George or James a good middle I'd personally go with George. Good luck

pilates · 15/03/2018 16:18

Very nice 👍

Annabelle4 · 15/03/2018 16:19

Great name

AutumnGlitterBall · 15/03/2018 16:21

I have one! Most folk know how to spell it, no issues with pronunciation and he’s the only little one I know (central Scotland). Lots of adult ones in my circle at the moment who all think he’s named after them! I think as long as you accept he’ll be called Matt by his pals, it’ll be fine.

SleepingStandingUp · 15/03/2018 16:22

Its a good, solid name and I know none under well probably adulthood. There was none in my kids at youth club so now teens nd none that I know of at my toddlers age. Whilst William in variations has been really (oddly) popular.
I know an Ian and a Neil of preschool age too

Oneflewsouth · 15/03/2018 16:40

Thank you all for the comments., what a lovely bunch you are !
I am in Surrey and I haven't met any little Matthews. I am definitely leaning towards Matthew George, hopefully he will still look like a little angel when he is in year 7 !

Oh yes, a lovely name. I know two lovely boys with that name - a 13 Yr old Matthew, an 8 year old Matthew and an extremely handsome black Labrador called Matthew Grin

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 15/03/2018 16:50

Fabulous name !

lardass88 · 15/03/2018 16:54

My db( 37) is called Matthew. I work in child care and haven't come across any children called it tho. Know a few adults but not children. It's a nice name :)

RoryAndLogan · 15/03/2018 16:56

Personally I think all three are very bland.

MakeItStopNeville · 15/03/2018 16:56

Ive never met a Matt I didn’t like. Love Matthew.

DramaAlpaca · 15/03/2018 18:04

I love it.

Foxedme · 15/03/2018 18:07

I really like it. There is only one Matthew in our school and so I definitely don’t think it’s popular

JadziaSnax · 15/03/2018 18:18

Great name. I am biased though.

userabcname · 15/03/2018 18:19

I like it. Not that popular in my area but the one Matthew I have taught was a lovely boy.

Evelynismycatsformerspyname · 15/03/2018 18:23

I like it - I'd have said it was a bit of a dad name though (as in lots of 30-50 year old Matthews, bit like calling your DD Claire or Sarah). Evidently not relevant in Scotland if it's a currently popular name.
