Think both are so pretty but can’t decide between the two! Which does everyone prefer?

Ottilie (along with Othilie and Ottoline) is marmite. Personally, I love it.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 14/03/2018 20:09

They do both scream TRYING TOO HARD, but Aurelia is marginally less pretentious.

windchimesabotage · 14/03/2018 20:10

Ottilie is my favourite but I think they are both beautiful names!

TatianaLarina · 14/03/2018 20:17

Oh God not the old try hard/pretentious bollocks.

Why aren’t you calling her Lily-Mae/Ava/Grace/Ruby/Olivia?

they sound as if you have avidly researched names that sound middle class, wealthy and horsey

And if they are middle class wealthy and horsey? Presumably they can call their kids whatever the fuck they like?

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 14/03/2018 20:17

Ottilie, it is becoming more 'used' of late, so not madly rarified (in a good way).

Aurelia is a bit 'just read the baby names book' (been there, God some crazy shit made our list Grin) and always reminds me of areola.

Camomila · 14/03/2018 20:18

I love Aurelia...first heard of it in love actually!

Re: trying to hard, people might just think she's got a bit of Spanish/Portughese/Italian heritage. My Italian DM and gran both thought 'a bit old fashioned' rather than 'try hard' when I was thinking about it (had a DS instead)

Camomila · 14/03/2018 20:20

A bit out there but I heard of a little 'Artemis' the other day. Similar feel IMO

drth12 · 14/03/2018 20:22

Aurelia

Littlemum2be86 · 14/03/2018 20:27

Oh wow, pretty brutal. Definitely not
trying to be horsey, posh, up my arse or pretentious. Liked Aurelia from Love Actually and Ottilie from someone on a Instagram I follow. No baby name books in sight! But appreciate the feedback none the less

I’ve got an Artemis.

I’d say that Artemis is out there but Aurelia is not - it’s well in. As the dormouse would say.

dahliaaa · 14/03/2018 20:28

Ottillie

BuzzKillington · 14/03/2018 20:29

Love Ottilie, but it's very, very common in this area.

TatianaLarina · 14/03/2018 20:32

OP, there are women in here who if you come up with a name that’s not strictly conservative, outside the ‘norm’ of their immediate social circle, that’s not a celebrity’s kids name - will tell you it’s pretentious.

It’s not, they just need to get out more.

Apparently if you are posh and wealthy you can call your kids what you like, but thereafter there are very strict class rules on what you can and can’t use.

StupideSaucisse · 14/03/2018 20:36

Sorry OP wasn't intending to be brutal or rude. Like I say, my opinion of names are coloured by the town we live in. Even if I liked a stereo-typical 'posh' name I couldn't do it for fear my DC would be bullied growing up. I chose very middle-of-the-road names. Not too common but not too out-there or posh. I played it safe!

However, I'd much rather a 'posh' middle class name any day of the week than some if the, let's say, 'chavvy' names I've heard in my area recently...

Phoenix
Heaven-Leigh
Princess

(I know I'm being judgmental, but those ^ ARE chavvy)

IdblowJonSnow · 14/03/2018 20:38

Neither, sorry! Not because I think they are too 'posh' or whatever, just not keen. Any other ideas?

Bowerbird5 · 14/03/2018 20:44

Aurelia😀
I know a lovely, kind , gentle lady with this name.

Beeziekn33ze · 14/03/2018 20:50

I prefer Aurelia but Ottilie Patterson was a great blues singer from Northern Ireland.

NocturneGmajor · 14/03/2018 20:54

Love Ottilie!

gingergenius · 14/03/2018 20:58

Artemis reminds of a series that Wendy Richards was in as a nanny and Artemis were her eldest (and unhappy) ward.

Sophronia · 14/03/2018 21:14

Aurelia

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 14/03/2018 21:14

Aurelia

Cosmoa · 14/03/2018 21:26

Aurelia Smile

MaryPoppinsStoleMyHandbag · 14/03/2018 21:52

Really like Ottilie. Not keen on Aurelia- too frilly for my taste.

mando12345 · 14/03/2018 21:54

I love Ottile, so pretty.

DramaAlpaca · 14/03/2018 21:56

I much prefer Aurelia. It's pretty but I don't find it frilly.

I'm not mad on Ottilie, it reminds me of otters & the word utterly.
