Think both are so pretty but can’t decide between the two! Which does everyone prefer?

I really like aurelia as its said in love actually but she's Portuguese right so would you pronounce it like that ?

How do you pronounce the other one Blush

LynetteScavo · 14/03/2018 22:07

Both are lovely!

I would say Ottilie..I overlooked this name, when DD was registered I kicked myself!

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 14/03/2018 22:12

Aurelia, it was Dh's favourite Great Aunt's name and if our baby due in june is a girl, a possible candidate.

Littlemum2be86 · 14/03/2018 22:24

Aurelia we pronounce or-ray-lea and Ottilie is ot-till-ee

I'm not a fan of either tbh. In my head I immediately think butterly after Ottilie and Aurelia is a bit oral for me. Just personal preference.. I don't think either are pretentious or try hard.

SuperBeagle · 14/03/2018 23:10

Otters or areolas.

I hate both of them, but hate Ottilie less.

LoveInTokyo · 15/03/2018 07:45

I think some people have hit on why I don’t like Ottilie. It sounds like an adverb.

It’s also an obvious fad name. Never heard of anyone being called Ottilie until maybe last year when the “Ottilie?” threads started on Mumsnet. I think it will have a brief moment of semi-popularity until the next fad name comes along, and then fade back into obscurity. But it’ll be popular enough for a couple of years to mark you out as a 2016-2019 baby.

Lupiform · 15/03/2018 10:55

I knew two Ottilies at school. I am 49. It's pretty unusual but there are some out there. Never met an Aurelia of any age but it seems to get mentioned on MN quite a bit so I expect I will come across one eventually. But I don't think it's less faddy than Ottilie - they are both enjoying a slightly unusual burst of popularity.

MammieBear · 15/03/2018 13:54

Ottilie by miles and miles...

heron98 · 15/03/2018 15:43

Ottilie is truly dreadful

eloisesparkle · 15/03/2018 21:06

Aurelie

littlepill · 15/03/2018 21:08

I LOVE Aurelia! Beautiful name.

PragmaticWench · 15/03/2018 21:14

What about Ettilie? Although I do like Aurelia.

Catrina1234 · 15/03/2018 22:24

I have a friend who called her daughter Ottilie Lucia which I think ia lovely. Never heard it before then. Someone asked how you pronounce Aurelia and there wasn't a reply. I think it will get mis pronounced and the child will probably have to spell it every time her name is needed. Sounds like a Disney princess!

April229 · 15/03/2018 22:46

Aurelia

LastNightsMakeUp · 16/03/2018 14:46

I think the insta mum (and dad) have made Ottilie a very popular choice and I’ve heard of a lot of Ottilie’s and Delilah’s around the baby groups recently. So I’d be weary if you are considering it because it’s slightly unusual.

I like Aurelia, it sound pretty and sunny.

I also like Oriana which I think is along the same lines.

sugarplumfairy28 · 16/03/2018 15:19

Ottilie, I am biased I have one, named after my Great Grandmother, also helps that we have German family. I had that name picked out about 22 years ago, and find it amusing that it seems to be in fashion right now.

The English seem to think it is pronounced Ot tea lee though which might not be helping. I shall say it is correctly (German name, German pronunciation) pronounced Ot tea Lea(h).

It can be shortened to all sorts, works well at all ages and I've heard it described as Victorian sophistication.

Mamabear4180 · 16/03/2018 19:31

Aurelia

Ragusa · 16/03/2018 23:41

Otillie to me just sounds incredibly frilly and girly. I'd also worry in case she ever ended up living in Lancs where the pronunciation would just be .... no (I'm from that neck of the woods). Ditto Zomerzet.

Aurelle is nice and a bit less frothy IMHO.

Greenyogagirl · 16/03/2018 23:45

Ottilie sounds like utterly to me and would get shortened to otter. I like Aurelia though

sugarplumfairy28 · 17/03/2018 19:22

Its Ot tea lea(h) not Otterly, or Ophelia with a T not a Fi sound. not once has my daughter been called Otter.

RachelTeeth · 18/03/2018 01:02

Here we pronounce it Or eel Ee ah. Not -ray lea.
And Ottilie-nope, we don’t pronounce Ts in the middle,of words, like a few regions (Manchester? N.I.) so it would be pronounced Uh-ill-ee. If you’re in a region of England that pronounces it’s Ts in the middle of words it would be ok, both pretty frilly but would suit a small child.

Coey2016 · 18/03/2018 07:27

Ottilie. I find Aurelia a little too much for my taste but i can see that it is very pretty.
