Joseph vs Ted

Due a little boy in May, I love the name Joseph but my husband is sitting on the fence. He wants to go with Ted, I don’t hate it and I do think it’s sweet but I think Joseph is traditional and will see him through his whole life, I’m not so sure that Ted would do the same. The middle name will be Daniel as that is my husband’s name. What are others thoughts?

I'm not a fan of nicknames on the birth certificate. Why not Theodore NN Ted?

We had this discussion when Ted first came up and I said I didn’t want Edward or Theodore as I don’t like them so my husband is now routing for Ted by itself 🙄 I know I should take into consideration his opinion as it’s his baby too but I just like Joseph more!

I love Ted or Teddy but as a nn. I'd give the longer name of Edward though so there was a choice when Baby is older.

Joseph is a lovely, classic name. Out of the 2 I prefer that.

If you don't like the longer names Edward and Theodore, I think you should go for Joseph (which is a lovely name!)

I'd choose Joseph Daniel or Edward Daniel (but known as Ted).

I love Joseph and it would have been on my list of a close friend hadn't already used it. Ted is cute, but I agree it's not quite as 'all ages', and quite trendy now - not that that's a bad thing, but it may date.

Ted would happily see him through if you gave him the full name Edward, Edwin, Edgar, Edmund, or Theodore. If none of those are options then name him Joseph.

Ted Daniel sounds silly. Joseph Daniel is much better.

Joseph will obviously be Joe most of his life from most people, and I find Joe a bit boring

I agree with biology, Ted Daniel sounds a bit wrong. Like an 80s Neighbours character. Somehow, Edward, or Joseph doesn’t. I like Joseph better, and Joe is a good nickname.

I like both the names Edward and Joseph (Joe and Ted for nn) but wouldn't call a child Ted - but that's my personal preference.

I love Joseph and Ted as a nn for Edward. I think Edward is lovely but if you don't like it I would probably go with Joseph so long as your dh agrees.

Ted Daniel sounds awkward and flat.
Joseph Daniel sounds nicer.

I like Ted but agree with other pp about not liking nn on birth certificates. I would opt for Theodore or Edward and then just call him ted.

Totally agree that ted is very ‘now’ that’s why I like Joseph personally and as I say, I wouldn’t go with Edward or Theodore at all. Keeping everything crossed that he may come around to my way of thinking, lol!!

I like Joseph and Joe. Such a strong, traditional name.

Ted is super trendy at the moment and just horrible in my opinion. I still see it as a boring middle-aged man's name like Keith or Paul. Sorry OP's OH!

I like nicknames without a full name, and even if you do go with just Ted, everyone is going to assume it’s short for one of the names you don’t like, so although personally I love Ted as a NN, I’m going to vote Joseph

Were going for Edward, and shortening it to Teddy. I love it. He can have either. My family is awash with Joes and Josephs. I did like Theodore but now reminds me of that flaming chipmunk. The perils of having a preschooler.
