In my experience, real nicknames evolve in relationship with the person (which is what makes them so wonderful). The Amelie I know is nicknamed Lilou. Her name was shortened to Lilly, which morphed into Lee-Lee (& Little Lee!), which morphed into Lilou (pronounced Lee-loo), which has stuck for quite a few years and most people call her that now. She's lovely and sparky.

Thanks everyone ... Liking the suggestion of mimi xx

llangennith · 04/03/2018 20:29

Ooh yes Mimi is lovely.

DickVanTyke · 04/03/2018 21:00

The one I know is Ami for short (rhymes with Jammy)

  1. It's a classic name.
  2. It's not as popular as Amelia/Emilia.
  3. It's easy to pronounce in European languages- your DD may want to move to a different country as an adult.
  4. It's a pretty name but a name that is definitely mature enough for a woman.

I loved the name Amélie for this baby but dh is totally against it mainly because we have an Élodie and people just can’t seem to get it I have to say every time her name is like melody without the M so I understand where you are coming from. DH said she will get Amelia and Emily a lot and doesn’t want to have to explain to everyone it’s Amily everytime someone she’s her name written down. It is a beautiful name though.

Busymummy34 · 11/03/2018 13:28

Yea...it's very frustrating Sad

keepingbees · 11/03/2018 13:34

I love Amelie, it was on my names list and I've always wished I had put my foot down and called my daughter it (DH insisted on a very popular name which I wasn't so keen on.)
I'm not a huge fan of Amelia and prefer Amelie. It's nice that it's a bit more unusual, I think you should embrace it Smile

TheDailyMailIsADisgustingRag · 11/03/2018 14:17

I like Ammie and Mimi as shortenings.

Yogagirl123 · 11/03/2018 14:19

It’s a gorgeous name, good choice OP

I childmind a little one called Amélie. Her nickname is Amé. She's a feisty little thing, and I love her name!

Busymummy34 · 11/03/2018 21:18

Thankyou to everyone who took the time to respond,it's really helped :)

mischiefmanaged01 · 13/03/2018 23:11

Amelie was our first choice name for a girl... but then my husband’s step sister has gone and called her little girl Amelia. A little too close, so I am envious that you got to use the name 😊

AlecOrAlonzo · 13/03/2018 23:28

Dash it!

I'd forgotten about this name and now I'm not going to have any more children. I had two opportunities to use it as well!

Love it. Really beautiful name.

TreaclePumpkin · 14/03/2018 09:29

If my next child were to be a girl, Amelie would be very near the top, if not right at the top of names on the list. Also love the name Elodie.

Busymummy34 · 14/03/2018 11:16

One year down the line and she just got called Amelia again today lol I give up!! Thanks everyone!!
