tillyluce I am in total agreeance with you, the hypocrisy and lack of awareness by some is staggering.

Cavender · 03/03/2018 16:11

Shackup I believe his proper name was always Duncan Jones. Zowie is his middle name.

He was known as Zowie, then Joey, then Joe during his childhood reverting to his birth name Duncan at around 18yo.

@Chocolateyescakeyes I've been on this site 5 mins and see pretentious thrown around so many times. I'm not sure what criteria you have to meet not to be around here. I am one of the many pretentious (amongst other things) parents on here though so perhaps I just can't see when others are too.

OP, if you makes you feel any better I made far worse offences with my children's names. I even named one of them a "cartoon characters'" name so... 😂 Be pretentious and proud 😉

frasier · 03/03/2018 16:28

tilly give us a clue! Scoobydo?!

tillyluce · 03/03/2018 16:30

@frasier 😂😂 She's Penelope.

tillyluce · 03/03/2018 16:32

Scooby was our boy's name.

Brittanyspears · 03/03/2018 16:35

Ziggy is better as it doesnt have 2 pronunciations

MarthasGinYard · 03/03/2018 16:37

Prefer Major Tom Op

HoratioNightboy · 03/03/2018 16:44

So many of the comments here suggest that some PP don't realise that Bowie is a name that exists beyond David.

It's a name of Gaelic origin, quite common in Scotland and presumably Ireland too, and has always been pronounced to rhyme with "Howie" (Irish might be different). So the OP is not being ignorant in her chosen pronunciation; it's David that's the anomaly. I don't think the OP has said she's using it to honour him, so what's the problem?

twinkledag · 03/03/2018 16:46

I like it!

DullAndOld · 03/03/2018 16:47

' some chav ' nice..Hmm
Do you mean a child who is less fortunate than little 'Bowie' is going to be?
Frankly anyone called 'Bowie' 'Hendrix' 'Jagger' just screams 'wannabe hipster parents' tbh.

TossDaily · 03/03/2018 16:51

Being named Bowie hasn't held this woman back. Far from it, in fact.

Bowie
upsideup · 03/03/2018 17:05

Has the OP said she likes the name because of David Bowie? I wouldnt name a child after a celebrity but cant see the offence. My DS2s middle name is Bowie, which was a name long before David Bowie and is after the man who brought DH up.

DullAndOld · 03/03/2018 17:07

yes she probably likes Bowie knives or something...:)

italiancortado · 03/03/2018 17:11

Has the OP said she likes the name because of David Bowie

Hahaha

Silly us making assumptions over here Confused

upsideup · 03/03/2018 17:27

italiancortado

You are making assumptions then? Bowie is a name in its own right.

DullAndOld · 03/03/2018 17:29

upside up, 'Bowie' is not a first name , it's a surname like Jim Bowie/Bowie knife/David Bowie.
I think it is a fair assumption to make, that it is the latter that has made the name attractive today.

daydreamnation · 03/03/2018 17:57

I actually think it's a really awful name but then you sound pretty awful, so go for it!

DullAndOld · 03/03/2018 17:58

Shock lol

Branleuse · 03/03/2018 18:03

I love it

DullAndOld · 03/03/2018 18:04

I think there should definitely be more baby boys called George...

tillyluce · 03/03/2018 18:10

I like the sound of George Bowie/Bowie George or Stephen Bowie actually lol.

heateallthebuns · 03/03/2018 18:32

Pretentiousness is subjective. Many people seem to think the name is pretentious, others do not. If you don't want anyone to think you're pretentious choose a different name. You can't please everyone, you may not care.

N.b. I've never heard anyone called Bowie in Ireland if anyone is bothered, which they're probably not.
