Literally only boys name I can think of...

Every one we think of either me or dh knows some chav we don't like with that name...

OP posts:

Buntysoven · 02/03/2018 23:49

My musical hero and no I wouldn't use the name because I think naming your child after any famous person is naff. Just my opinion... and I hate the word chav too.

SnowBusinessLikeSlowBusiness · 02/03/2018 23:51

But its not a boys name, is it? How can you literally only think of one name, that isn't even a name?

elephantoverthehill · 02/03/2018 23:55

If you are trying to be original I'm afraid I already know a child named Bowie.

Topseyt · 03/03/2018 03:00

Awful. Really naff naming children after pop stars, who had very often created a stage name for dramatic effect anyway.

Don't lumber your child with that.

It can't possibly be the only boy's name you can think of. Try harder. Much harder.

frasier · 03/03/2018 03:10

Bit old now I think, time's passed.

Cavender · 03/03/2018 03:34

One thing to consider, if your son ever lives in the US or works with Americans they’ll call him boo-ie (like the knife).

Chocolateyescakeyes · 03/03/2018 09:44

OP, it’s your baby your choice. As a previous poster said MN gets so hyped up about the word chav, but happy to put a label on many others. If you like it, go for it, better than having the same name as 15 others in his school, a name is supposed to identify you after all.
I like it how it’s a little different to the typical names in that are super popular just now, although granted is getting more and more popular.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 03/03/2018 10:04

Pronounced like now

It's incredibly pretentious to name your child after someone you can't even pronounce the name of.

It's Bow-ie as in bow and arrow.

Your ignorance of music must be almost on par with your use of ignorant and offensive language. I.e chav.

tillyluce · 03/03/2018 12:44

The hypocrisy of this post is hilarious! While I agree that chav isn't a nice term to use, I don't think people who throw around the words try hard, pretentious and ignorant to describe a stranger on the internet portray themselves as being any better. Telling someone who is obviously and immediately a try hard, because they like a certain name, to "try harder" is brilliant 😂

OP, I quite like the name but I would only use it as a middle name personally. I think it's unusual enough for most people's brains to jump to David Bowie and automatically come to the conclusion that you're big fans and your son was named after him. I probably would keep it as a middle name because of that. It might get a bit old for him. I would also pronounce it BOWee because I think it sounds nicer.

If that's not something that bothers you then go for it. I don't see how it's a dreadful name at all. Many surnames are being used as firsts. Flynn, Finley, Sullivan, Finnegan, Remington, Jones even so I don't see how that would be an issue.

The fact that a few celebrities have named their sons Bowie isn't a big deal either IMO. If a celeb named their child a traditional, old fashioned named then I doubt it would have ever been brought up.

I don't understand how a name can be try hard either unless you're painting a lightning bolt on his face at birth. I wonder if all Michael's are taught how to to the moonwalk as soon as the can walk too...

tillyluce · 03/03/2018 12:47

Oh ridiculous, snobby and a twat too. Lovely... Much nicer than calling someone a chav. Agreed.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 03/03/2018 13:06

Actually, I called OP's use of the word chav ignorant and their intention to name their child after someone whose name they can't pronounce, pretentious. These are both perfectly valid words to use in this context. Neither were meant as an insult.

The word chav however is a derogatory slang word, often intended as an insult, that has negative connotations of the working class.

MikeUniformMike · 03/03/2018 13:11

It's dreadful. How about Sabatier?

IamPickleRick · 03/03/2018 13:18

I don’t think it’s chavvy. I do think it’s silly.

I wouldn’t be able to take it seriously - I’d be whispering “Ground control to major tom” in to his monitor or asking him about his nappy/bog of eternal stench or singing “ch ch ch ch changes” while I got him dressed.

If you want him to have a live dedicated to David Bowie and his songs and phrases then go for it Grin

fuckoffsnow · 03/03/2018 13:19

Ridiculous hipsters.

tillyluce · 03/03/2018 13:21

@BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy You weren't the only one who posted. Do you not agree that calling someone a twat is intended as an insult? Do you hear the words ignorant, pretentious, try hard, etc and think that they're positive associations? They are all terms that are thrown around on here daily.

I don't agree with using the word chav, I don't like the word/term but I'm not on here calling other people pretentious, snobby, ridiculous, try hard twats. It would make me just as bad, no?

IamPickleRick · 03/03/2018 13:23

When he’s crying “your eyes can be so cruel!!!”

Tantrums = “Goblin king goblin king wherever you may be, take this child of mine far away from me”

When he’s done something weird “there was a boy... a very strange enchanted boy...”

When it’s time to go out “put on your red shoes and dance the blues”

This is why I couldn’t do it. I’d be singing snippets of David Bowie songs for the next 50 years. Other people will do that to the kid too, don’t put him through it.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 03/03/2018 13:35

I don't like the word/term but I'm not on here calling other people pretentious, snobby, ridiculous, try hard twats.

I'm not convinced calling someone pretentious is an insult when they are clearly being pretentious.

I agree the word twat is certainly an insult but it doesn't marginalise a certain group of people the way the word chav does.

macbethh · 03/03/2018 14:00

Bowie is a cute dogs name...
Definitely not for a human though

macbethh · 03/03/2018 14:02

*@FluffyMcCloud * Sounds like Jonathan Ross saying Barry

Grin
Chocolateyescakeyes · 03/03/2018 14:36

”I'm not convinced calling someone pretentious is an insult when they are clearly being pretentious”.

Being pretentious is subjective and has negative connotations, so is not a compliment...

ShackUp · 03/03/2018 14:46

Zowie Bowie changed his name to Duncan Jones. So you might find your DS name hanging in future...

ReelingLush18 · 03/03/2018 14:52

I know of a girl called Bowie. In a very mixed state school playground it sounded beyond pretentious. What's wrong with David if you want to honour DB?

tillyluce · 03/03/2018 14:55

@BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy Yes because nobody could ever just like a name. Of course, they're just naming their child it in hopes people think they're a better person because of their choice.

"Ignorance of music" is another subjective term. Is that because you assume OP isn't a fan? Or because you assume she likes the name despite it being a musician's stage name?

Also, a lot of people weren't 100% sure how Bowie pronounced it. Bow and bow are the same. Who is to say your way is correct? Especially if, god forbid, OP isn't naming her son to purposefully naming her son after David Bowie.

Anyway I was discussing the level of offence you'd take to each insult. The intent was there whether the word was chav, twat, pretentious or whatever. They are all meant as insults. Trying to make a point of how disgraceful OP is for using the word chav by going on to insult her just doesn't make sense to me. It makes you no better.

tillyluce · 03/03/2018 14:58

Purposing name him after David Bowie.
Wasn't discussing the level of offence.

I really should bother when so tired lol.

tillyluce · 03/03/2018 14:59

Shouldn't. My god 😂
