That’s what I don’t understand about MN if you call something chavvy you get called all the words under the sun but it’s totally acceptable to call people ‘pretentious wankers’ ‘try hard hipsters’ ‘middle class snobs’ and refer the ‘weak’ male names as ‘wet’ the list goes on... I’m a chav. I’m not going to rant and rave about someone classing a name as such.

But back to the point. I don’t like Bowie.

Bimbler · 26/02/2018 20:28

Howard from Take That has a son called Bowie, as does Paul Weller, and someone from Emmerdale.

What exalted company you'll be in.

FluffyMcCloud · 26/02/2018 20:29

Sounds like Jonathan Ross saying Barry

SuperBeagle · 26/02/2018 21:11

Surely Bowie should be pronounced bow like bow tie? Not bow like take a bow. Confused

spiderlight · 27/02/2018 10:10

It's my dog's middle name.

DaisyBD · 27/02/2018 11:10

my friend has a cow called Bowie

Thisusernamethingistricky · 27/02/2018 11:12

Just no. Apart from anything else, whichever pronunciation you go for, it will always get mispronounced the other way.

Whowhatwhy · 27/02/2018 11:12

And that is the only name you could think of? You do know it was his surname anyway? Why not David?

bluecashmere · 27/02/2018 11:13

As PP said, if it's inspired by David Bowie it sbould rhyme with Zoe so you would be mispronouncing it.

FizzyGreenWater · 27/02/2018 12:08

If you're bothered about sounding, err, too modern/different/made up (as your first post suggests) then this isn't the way to go about it!

Call him Colin and be done with it.

italiancortado · 27/02/2018 12:15

You do know it was his surname anyway

And it wasn't even....

Only1scoop · 27/02/2018 12:18

Awful

Whowhatwhy · 27/02/2018 12:19

Well indeed italian

SoupDragon · 27/02/2018 12:19

Literally only boys name I can think of...

Think harder!

pinkyredrose · 27/02/2018 12:22

OP you don't pronounce it like that. It rhymes with Zoe.

Only1scoop · 27/02/2018 12:22

Quite Italian

Op Why not call him Jones?

SoupDragon · 27/02/2018 12:24

Does this mean his son was called Zoe? 🤔

Hesburger · 27/02/2018 12:33

There was a Bowie in my primary school in the mid 80s... I thought he was named after the Goblin King at the time.

Now I think it would be a bit twee/ try hard. There are so many better names.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 27/02/2018 12:35

It’s funny how people don’t call their children after dead female artists. I’ve never seen anyone suggesting Winehouse, Houston or Joplin as a baby name. It’s always Bowie, Hendrix, Corbain or Lennon.

Only1scoop · 27/02/2018 12:36

Very true

Whowhatwhy · 27/02/2018 12:54

Not sure about that bluths. I know Amys and Whitneys even. I think girls are more likely to be given first names than surnames.

HouseworkIsASin10 · 27/02/2018 12:56

I don't think it's chavvy. But it is 'try too hard', same as Jagger.

heateallthebuns · 27/02/2018 13:02

Awful, not coz chavvy but really try hard, I'd feel sorry for kid and think you're pretentious.

RaininSummer · 27/02/2018 13:04

I love Bowie as a musician/person but calling a child by that name isn't great IMHO. Maybe a middle name if you must as a tribute. I tend to name my dogs after favoured musicians so I have had Marley and Ziggy.

Alisvolatpropiis · 27/02/2018 16:34

Bowie is a dreadful first name.

Fgs - David Bowie’s son is, and has always been, Duncan Zowie Jones. His surname has never been Bowie because it was not actually his father’s surname.
