My grandmothers name was Marion. if we have a daughter we are going to Use OH gran name as middle name, So what do you think of Marion as a first name? Or Marianne pronounced Marry-Anne as a close name?

I like Marion actually, though prefer the spelling Marian. It would be refreshingly unusual these days.

Marianne, however, is just gorgeous. It's one of my favourite names.

DazzlingMilton · 25/02/2018 22:53

I think it’s a derivative of Mary and the meaning is bitter. I do like alternatives Marianne, Mariana and Marian though, but not sure if I could let the bitter bit go.

DazzlingMilton · 25/02/2018 22:53

What about Anne-Marie, that’s one you don’t hear much anymore which is lovely!!

MNOverinvestor · 25/02/2018 22:55

Love it, especially with your preferred spelling.

Bostin · 25/02/2018 22:56

Marion is a beautiful name.

chezmk1988 · 25/02/2018 23:04

Anne-Marie is not for me. Not a fan of double barrelled names and I knew a not so nice girl called Anne-Marie lol

I like that you want to honour your grandmother too but Marion is awful.
Marianne is marginally better

RideOn · 25/02/2018 23:14

I do particularly like Marianne. Marion or Marianne both are lovely first names. There are quite “strong” ime, both sound like the name of a capable woman!

RavenWings · 25/02/2018 23:16

Marianne is gorgeous. I'm not so keen on Marion. It's very middle aged to me.

Synecdoche · 25/02/2018 23:18

I actually really like Marion.

frasier · 25/02/2018 23:23

Love Marianne, an updated version of your grandmother's name :)

MissMoodyMoo · 25/02/2018 23:28

What about mhairi?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 25/02/2018 23:31

I like Marion.

ElspethTascioni · 26/02/2018 00:03

I love Marion, I think it’s a great name!

ChocolateCrunch · 26/02/2018 00:28

Marianne, rather than Marion - the latter sounds dated to me.

SuperBeagle · 26/02/2018 00:53

Prefer Marianne by a long way.

Marianne is the name of a song by Leonard Cohen, and there was the famous Marianne Faithfull. It's got fab connotations.

Kokeshi123 · 26/02/2018 02:29

I like both Marion and Marianne. But Marianne is pronounced "marryANN," not Mary Anne. "Marion" is pronounced "MARRY-un."

frasier · 26/02/2018 02:36

I’d say Marion was pronounced MARRY-on.

DowntonCrabby · 26/02/2018 02:50

I ADORE Marianne.

MammieBear · 26/02/2018 10:01

Lovely choice Wink

MaryPoppinsStoleMyHandbag · 26/02/2018 12:19

Not keen on Marion but I like Marianne (the one I know pronounces her name MarryAnne).

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 26/02/2018 13:00

Not keen on Marion for a first name.
Manon?

DuggeeHugs · 26/02/2018 15:36

I really like Marion - it was a close contender for DDs naming

Minestheoneinthegreen · 26/02/2018 18:55

Marianne is a nicer version. Never met a nice Anne-marie!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 26/02/2018 18:57

I like both, I think Marianne is a bit more fussy than Marion but they are both great names. The nicest boss I ever had was a Marion, and my childhood friend was Marianne so good connotations for me.
