My grandmothers name was Marion. if we have a daughter we are going to Use OH gran name as middle name, So what do you think of Marion as a first name? Or Marianne pronounced Marry-Anne as a close name?

Marianne - pronunciation and spelling is far nice in my opinion, or possibly Marine if not.

I like the Marian spelling, mainly because it makes me think of this

My Mum and Mum-in-Law are both Marions so DD's middle name is Marion. I like it. I like it as a first name too.

Marion is pretty
Marianne is gorgeous

I like Marian - this spelling

I also like Marianne

Actually I think I prefer Marianne

namechange2222 · 28/02/2018 19:22

No Marion is a horrible, harsh name

MonsteraDeliciosa · 01/03/2018 00:49

Another in appreciation of Marianne here, for many reasons.

Marion is less pretty.

Marion is a man's name, in Polish. It was John Wayne's real name (Marion Morrison).

I always thought the English female name is Marian.

I prefer Mariana - I think Marianne is a bit blah.

daisypond · 01/03/2018 20:12

I really like Marian and Marianne, though they have a different feel to them. Marian is very fresh now - it has a nice simplicity and lack of pretentiousness about it and it's perhaps more current, or even just ahead of the curve, than Marianne. And there's Maid Marian as a role model. Marianne has a more classical vibe to it. But Marianne is particularly lovely, I think.

tortelliniforever · 01/03/2018 20:14

Weirdly, I quite like it for a boy but not for a girl.

MikeUniformMike · 01/03/2018 20:51

Marianne is nice enough. Anne-Marie's dated and I don't think I ever met a nice one.

MikeUniformMike · 01/03/2018 20:54

Marine just makes me think of a French politician. Marian (pron MAR-yan, with the Mar as in Marry not Marr) is nice.
Maria is a favourite.

DreamingOfAHotBeach · 01/03/2018 21:05

I agree that I like wanting to honour your grandmother but Marion is awful.

MikeUniformMike · 01/03/2018 22:14

I don't think it is. It makes me think of Marion Cotillard, the French actress, so it seems a bit glamorous.
Use Marion not some substitute. Use it as a middle name if you're not sure.

My best friend is Marian. I've never met another Marian. She did get called Maid Marian when we were growing up but is otherwise a nice name.

The more I think about it, the more I agree with this.
