Konsta or Niilo

Middle name would be Justus. I slightly prefer Niilo, OH prefers Konsta. Konsta would probably be easier for English speakers to pronounce, right?

I prefer Niilo

CircleofWillis · 24/02/2018 10:14

How do you pronounce Niilo?

Natsku · 24/02/2018 10:16

Nee-loh (short O sound), emphasis on the first syllable.

As in O for orange

Heratnumber7 · 24/02/2018 10:18

Nilo (without the ii)

Natsku · 24/02/2018 10:25

Can't do it with only one I, would be pronounced wrong (I'm in Finland and pronunciation is precise)

You’re right that English would pronounce Konsta easier - I’d presume it’s a Greek name thought not Finish.
Personally prefer Niilo - I’d naturally read it as Nee-lo though - but no one can pronounce my name and it doesn’t bother me :)

ChocolateCrunch · 24/02/2018 10:38

Niilo

Natsku · 24/02/2018 10:45

I think it originates from a Greek name. Maybe he wouldn't be bothered about mispronunciation but I just remember my brother would get irritated by people always getting his name wrong which makes me wary of it but it is such a nice name, plus the meaning is special to me (Victory of the people) but Konsta is a good solid name plus not too common.

Niilo is lovely, people will learn how to pronounce it

Anything beginning with 'k' and is a bit different if you're in the U.K. may be seen as one of those chav names J or K initial so I'd steer clear

CatsForgotPassword · 24/02/2018 11:04

Since when are J or K names chavvy? James, Jonathan, Kieran, Jake, Kenny...all normal names Blush

StickStickStickStick · 24/02/2018 11:06

Is go for niilo. I have similar associations with k names...

Natsku · 24/02/2018 11:09

J names are out for a first name anyway (middle name wouldn't really come up much with my British family so that can be a J name) as the Finnish J is a soft J, more like a Y, and pretty sure my family would never get it right, especially my dad!

Never heard of K names being chavvy though.

toomanyweeds · 24/02/2018 11:17

Konsta would not be seen as chavy - that is ridiculous.

OP I like Niilo, but agree with others that it might be difficult to stop people saying nee - low.

Will the baby spend most of his childhood in Finland or the UK? (Or somewhere else entirely?)

CatsForgotPassword · 24/02/2018 11:18

I considered Kiran for one of mine and have never been told it’s “chavvy”. I wouldn’t let it put you off

Backingvocals · 24/02/2018 11:18

I don’t know the name Konsta - it sounds nice. However if you are going to be in the UK I think it would become Konsta pation

Natsku · 24/02/2018 11:19

Live in Finland, we regularly visit the UK and when he's a bit older I plan on sending him with his big sister to spend part of each summer with my parents there.

Grin at Konsta Pation - didn't even think of that!

RavenWings · 24/02/2018 11:22

I like Niilo, I would have instinctively pronounced it your way. I don't see much merit in the argument "English speakers will struggle with it" anyway. They can and will learn, that shouldn't stop anyone using international names.

toomanyweeds · 24/02/2018 11:22

On that case I'd go with Niilo, it's a really lovely name.

MikeUniformMike · 24/02/2018 11:23

I prefer Niilo

Natsku · 24/02/2018 11:27

The consensus is in, shall see if I can persuade OH then!

Cosmoa · 24/02/2018 12:38

Niilo is a beautiful name! Konsta isn't as pleasant to say but it's also nice..

FogCutter · 24/02/2018 12:47

Niilo sounds lovely to my ear but Konsta doesn't.

Konsta sounds like it's missing another syllable or 2 at the end?

Natsku · 24/02/2018 13:16

There's a longer version - Konstantin
