Boys names- we keep going round in circles

So this has been our top list for a couple of weeks now, but we are making no progress. Charles, Tobias, Merrick, Abraham, Hugo, +Felix, Anselm and Clancy are hanging in there. We are really struggling! Inputs? Last time I posted I dropped Clancy from the main list after comments but I can’t quite get rid of it Grin

Clancy reminds me of two things:

  1. Clancy Wiggum, the cop from The Simpsons
  2. The bush poem "Clancy of the Overflow" by Banjo Paterson.

Charles, Tobias, Hugo and Felix are all perfectly fine, "acceptable" names. I think Abraham is far too religious, and unless you're overtly religious people, it's too much. Anselm and Merrick aren't great.

Suggestions:

  • Merritt
  • Aldous
  • Amos
  • Bertrand / Bertram
  • Crosby
  • Clark
  • Clement
  • Desmond
  • Douglas
  • Edgar
  • Ernest
  • Edmund / Edward
  • Eugene
  • Evander
  • Errol
  • Fraser
  • Flynn
  • Griffin
  • Gilbert
  • Linus
  • Marlon
  • Magnus
  • Orson
  • Raymond
  • Roscoe
  • Stanley
  • Spencer
  • Winston

Clancy is bloody awful.

mumgointhroughtorture · 09/02/2018 23:58

Tobias is the most "normal" and nicest .

Charles , Felix and Hugo are ok if a little "posh"

Others are awful.

How about
Seth ,
Sebastian
Jude
Josiah

OnlyJoking1 · 10/02/2018 00:10

I like Tobias, Joel and Elliot, depends if people will shorten their names.

DiegoMadonna · 10/02/2018 00:16

I love Felix and really love Abraham (nn Bram - so cool!)

None of the others would get anywhere near my top 100 boys names.

Cattenberg · 10/02/2018 00:25

Not Merrick, reminds me and I'm sure others of the elephant man

That was my first thought too, though I agree most kids probably won't have heard of him.

I like Tobias.

Mrsknackered · 10/02/2018 02:15

What about Abel or Amos?

I like Abraham, Hugo and Felix.

Mrsknackered · 10/02/2018 02:16

I have a feeling one of Rees-Mogg's Tory tots is called Anselm, which puts me off.

Afternoon · 10/02/2018 05:21

I like Charles and Felix.

Merrick is too much like Derek with an M.

ElizaDontlittle · 10/02/2018 06:05

Mrs I think you're right...

I'm not too keen on using the same initial as it's a bit matchy but I like Felix. I have a cat called Toby - so my cat name association is completely different!
I like Charlie too - but using the longer form of either is always wise I think.

Congratulations on your baby boy Flowers

17caterpillars1mouse · 10/02/2018 06:47

Tobias gets my vote

I dont mind Hugo also

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/02/2018 06:53

I like all the shortened versions of Tobias, Charles and Abraham. So I’d go for one of those.

Clancy is terrible. Just terrible.

userabcname · 10/02/2018 07:58

Love Felix!

Belindabauer · 10/02/2018 11:00

Is there one which sounds best/ flows next with your surname ?
Failing that eliminate any which make up dodgy initials e.g. PIG!

Smoliver · 10/02/2018 11:06

Charles or Tobias get my vote

FizzyGreenWater · 10/02/2018 14:07

I know it's a typo in your OP but I like the sound of +Felix 😁

Would it be a silent +, or would you pronounce it PlusFelix?

BooseysMom · 10/02/2018 14:57

Congratulations! Flowers I spent ages deciding names and had loads for a girl and not many for a boy. A boy it was and after DS was born and DH had gone home from the hospital leaving me alone with DS, i was fed up of telling midwives we hadn't decided on a name yet so just decided there and then to name him Ruben which was top of our list anyway!.. Thankfully DH was happy with that as long as we could spell it Ruben and not Reuben..this causes confusion but so many names have various spellings. Anyway i personally like Clancy the best! Hadn't thought of that one although Tobias was in our list. Don't like Abraham. Good luck x

timeisnotaline · 10/02/2018 17:36

Oh I’d definitely pronounce it ‘plusfelix’ Grin
I did get Clancy from Clancy of the overflow. Every day of his life I’d say ‘where’s clancy? Clancy’s gone to Queensland adroving and we don’t know where he are’ GrinGrin
I did hear that re Jacob Rees Mogg but I won’t let him spoil Anselm for me. My grandparents were married in the church of st caecilia and st Anselm.

My DD was at school with a boy called Arie. Think one of his parents were Belgian or Dutch.

BlackberryandNettle · 11/02/2018 22:17

Abraham - kind of like. Really like the nn option of Abe. Maybe Abel?
Hugo or Felix both nice, especially Felix.Tobias is ok.
I like Charles but it is bound to become Charlie and there are just so many of them around.

BooseysMom · 13/02/2018 07:03

Timeisnotaline.... This made me LOL...Every day of his life I’d say ‘where’s clancy? Clancy’s gone to Queensland adroving and we don’t know where he are’ 😄

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 13/02/2018 07:05

Anselm and Abraham are lovely. Tobias is nice. Merrick and Clancy are dreadful. Felix and Charles are OK. Not keen on Hugo, think it's a bit of a fad name atm.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 13/02/2018 07:07

I think a PP's suggestion of Amos would work very well with your tastes.

SplishSplashSplat · 13/02/2018 07:09

Clyde?

LizardMonitor · 13/02/2018 07:17

Merrick sounds like the name of a big Corporate, one of those companies in big glass buildings and a naff vacuous logo.

I like Clancy, a lot.

Or Abe.
