DP suggested this today out of the blue. What do you think? We'd probably shorten to Gerry but also Ged is a possibility.

Sure, why not? It's at least a recognised name, rather than an object, country or badly spelt to look different.

Ged is great- if go with Jared/ Jed.
But I'd definitely check its meaning first.
