Any language or culture or era, except very American-type ones like surnames or states, or very unusual pronunciations.

May be worth having a more gendered middle name so they have options if they don’t want to be gender neutral.

user1485182339 · 01/02/2018 11:36

We were thinking of just one, no middles. Would defeat the point if they were easily identifiable on official applications etc.

Oakley, Micah, Noah, Sam, Jo, Angel, are alll names I have heard IRL for both genders

Twooter · 01/02/2018 14:37

I know it’s not answering the question, but i’m Still curious under which circumstances you think it will be beneficial.

Twooter · 01/02/2018 14:41

I guess I feel lots of the names mentioned, especially the commonly girls names, could lead to a load of teasing etc if given to a boy, and you may end up with a girl who may like a more feminine name. I’ve daughters and they all do ‘boyish activities - football etc, but they all like having pretty names - it doesn’t stop them being who they are.

Claude or Dominique can be either male or female in French, though in the UK I imagine most people would think that Dominique is female.

Please may I ask: why do you want a Unisex name? Is it so that at interviews the panel will say "ooh, I thought you were going to be a boy!" (Or vice Versa) And then your dc can sue them for making a gender statement? Joking apart (hopefully)- I just wondered....

Twooter · 01/02/2018 17:06

I thought it could make self identity changes easier - girl one day, boy the next, no name changes to worry about.

daisypond · 01/02/2018 20:02

How about Aster? It's a plant (flower) but is also a biological term describing a star-like structure. The Latin word aster, meaning star, is the root. I think that would suit both a boy and a girl easily.

daisy Aster is quite interesting. I associate it with female in some Germanic languages, but it does sound fairly male too somehow. Maybe it sounds like Aston or Ashton.
twooter some little girls might like 'pretty' names, but what's a 'pretty' name? I don't think the majority of children grow into adults and sigh 'I love my pretty name! or 'I love my rough 'n rumble name!' while enduring their daily commute age 42?
user not the suing part, and not only for job interviews, but it seems to me there are lots of personal and professional benefits to being uncategorised as much as possible.
But I do think I'd like to steer away from names that are somehow appropriated and thus obvious because of it. Hence not liking the American trend much, especially if it turns out to be a girl.
Alex would be good for being unassuming and truly unisex from a European point of view, but we have so many Alex's in our lives already. Confused

Heard of a boy Eden today. I know a girl one. Jude also seems to confuse people.

user1485182339 · 02/02/2018 14:31

merry I love Jude. I really do. This thread might not even exist if I could have Jude. But it would be a repeat within immediate family, and just won't work. Sad

Eden makes me think of that girl in the Santa Barbara soap opera from the 80s. 90s? Still on? With Robin Wright. Am I remembering it right?

usernamepassword · 04/02/2018 11:36
