Any language or culture or era, except very American-type ones like surnames or states, or very unusual pronunciations.

I know that boys names are being repurposed for girls at the moment but John?

Rare to have girls names repurposed for boys (and there is a reason for that) no one is ever going to call their boy Rachel or Larissa are they really?

Diminutives can be common to names for boys/girls like Charlie for Charlotte or Charles, or Bobbie for Roberta/Roberta I'd pick the right sex long name for the BC personally. It's nice to have the choice.

Some posters are slightly taking the piss, no?

Thanks for all the suggestions! Also like Pip.
Anyone have any ideas for non-English names that fit the bill? Eg I like that Andrea is considered male in places like Italy or Spain, but female in the UK or the Netherlands (might be wrong in the latter?). Can't personally use Andrea, but yes, something like that, from anywhere in the world, as long as it isn't too difficult to pronounce for strangers.
rain guess it's a personal preference? Future-proofing?

Dara - I know it primarily as a boys name (it’s very popular where I am), but it’s also used more and more for girls.

SoftSheen · 30/01/2018 13:15

I like Robin/Robyn.

Nicola is considered female in the UK, but male in Italy.

StrictlySnow · 30/01/2018 13:17

Op, when you say future proofing, do you mean future proofing for the possibility that your DC might have gender issues?

user1485182339 · 30/01/2018 14:45

implant do you know if Dara is just one of those that have transferred from male to female through recent popular use, or if it is historically also unisex?
rain no not really, but I guess that's a plus. 'Issues' is such a harsh word, anyway. Confused
I was more thinking about jobs, prejudice, opportunity. It's nice to have the chance to give yourself more of a chance, either way.
Nicola was a good suggestion, although I don't like it personally for us. I know too many!

It might just be me but unisex names are a bit trend-led.
Something like Alex or Rowan doesn't give much indication of age, sex, nationality, race, education or class but names like Taylor or Courtney might bracket someone.
(I'd think Taylor was a young girl/woman, probably American and Courtney either a middle aged Afro-Caribbean male or British teenage girl)

RavenWings · 30/01/2018 15:02

As an Irish person I'd probably expect a Dara to be male but wouldn't be taken aback by a female one.

I'm that way with a lot of gender neutral names though - Frankie/ Chris/ Alex etc I would imagine to be male initially.

I have only ever known Kit as a short form of Christopher.

One of the suggestions above is the name of our landlords where I work Grin

vitaminC · 30/01/2018 16:14

I've known "Avery"s of both gender.
Also Max (Could be Maxine or Maximilian).

As regards design names, Laurence is female in France and male in English-speaking countries.

vitaminC · 30/01/2018 16:14

*foreign, not design
