ELCS for my baby girl is scheduled for 6 February - which is the centenary of the Representation of the People Act.
Any nice Suffragette names out there we could use? So far I have:
Emmeline (I love but DH not keen)
Christabel (quite like but again DH doesn’t)
Sylvia (not sure about)

Sylvia is horrible. Silvia is ok if you are Italian.
Not keen on Emmeline - is it pronounced Em-muh-lyn or Emmuh-line?
Christabel is nice.

ladystarkers · 29/01/2018 10:41

Emmeline too like Emma which I dislike
Christabel nice
Prefer Sylvie

Wollstonecraft1 · 29/01/2018 10:44

Millicent for Millicent Fawcett? Millie for short?

senua · 29/01/2018 10:45

Eleanor (Rathbone)

ShoeJunkie · 29/01/2018 10:46

Millicent? After Millicent Fawcett - a suffragist rather than a suffragette.

jennymount · 29/01/2018 10:47

Hanna (Sheehy Skeffington)
Constance (Markievicz)

Wollstonecraft1 · 29/01/2018 10:47

PS. The statue of her will be unveiled in Parliament Square on February 6 too so that ties in nicely.

Millicent (Fawcett)
Emily (Wilding Davison)
Flora (Drummond)

Emily is a nice name but you wouldn't want to call your DD after Emily Davison.

Smoliver · 29/01/2018 11:33

I love the name Emmeline. Some other suffragette names I've found:

Millicent (Fawcett)
Evelina (Haverfield)
Esther (Roper)
Lydia (Becker)
Josephine (Butler)
Cicely (Hamilton)

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 29/01/2018 11:44

Love Emmeline, Christabel and Josephine.

Thanks for the link Thisway
I like Flora. Millicent doesn’t go very well with our last name.

Louisa
Edith
Evelina
Alice
Mabel
Selina

I love Christabel. And have only ever known one.

wowfudge · 30/01/2018 21:36

Cristabel as an alternative spelling. I really don't get the pp saying Sylvia is horrible and Silvia is okay - it's a pretty name. Not Edith - awful.

RavenWings · 30/01/2018 21:43

Emmeline - like this, but if dh isn't into it I reckon it has to go.
Christabel - I'd go for Cristabel personally. I'm not mad on it but it's a nice name.
Sylvia - I agree that Silvia is a lot nicer. Just visually much more appealing.
Flora is nice, bit margarine-y I suppose but still nice.
Millicent is dreadful!

LoveInTokyo · 30/01/2018 21:43

I love Josephine (but I live in France where the pronunciation is a bit prettier).

MikeUniformMike · 30/01/2018 21:46

Sylvia is awful to me sorry. I think it looks ugly. I don't like Edith but Edie is ok but blends into all the Evies and Eves and Evelyn... all ok but so many.
Silvia in Italian seems ok as it sounds different, as does a French Edith.

SugarMilk · 30/01/2018 22:01

Not suffragette but Florence (Nightingale) in a similar spirit.

CrustyCob · 30/01/2018 22:16

Sophia ( Duleep Singh)

Bostin · 30/01/2018 22:19

I love Sylvia.

Leonora?

Thiswayorthatway · 31/01/2018 11:29

Not suffragetes but strong women

Marie Curie
Elizabeth Fry
Mary Wollstonecroft
Ada Lovelace
Frances Buss
Octavia Hill

MikeUniformMike · 31/01/2018 12:06

Some of the women mentioned on here were suffragists not suffragettes.

Uhohmummy · 31/01/2018 15:01

Happy to get Suffragist suggestions too. They made an equally valid contribution, in my view.
