ELCS for my baby girl is scheduled for 6 February - which is the centenary of the Representation of the People Act.
Any nice Suffragette names out there we could use? So far I have:
Emmeline (I love but DH not keen)
Christabel (quite like but again DH doesn’t)
Sylvia (not sure about)

Millicent doesn’t go very well with our last name.

What a shame as it seemed to be written in the stars what with the statue and all.

I agree about it being a shame about Millicent. Can you not put Millicent down on the BC but call her Milli or Milly or Millie from the get-go. So that that's the 'name' that always gets said with your surname?

WhiteHairReally · 31/01/2018 20:00

Mary ( Wollstonecraft)
Elizabeth Garrett Anderson ( Millicent Fawcett’s sister +++)
Annie (Besant and Kenney)
Ethel (Smyth)
Charlotte Despard
Constance ( Lytton)
Adela (Pankhurst) the Pankhurst that got sent to Australia by the rest of the family, although you might want to check out her political ‘journey’.

What a wonderful thing for your daughter to be able say inspired her name!

Emerald or Violet for the colours of the suffragette sash.

Mrsknackered · 06/02/2018 14:20

Hope your CS went well OP.

What have you decided on Thanks

People saying Sylvia is ugly are just brainwashed by the fact that it is was a very popular name for women that are now mostly over 65. I know one in her twenties though. It is a lovely name.

I have seen the name Sylvie drooled over here though, (it's also lovely). But in France it's apparently considered a middle aged name. So that shows it's just a question of perception, rise above it.

Sylvia was a popular name used in 17th and 18th century poetry I believe, and of course there's Sylvia Plath. Nice meaning too.

Pemba · 06/02/2018 19:22

And Sylvia Pankhurst of course!

Estellanpip · 06/02/2018 19:27

There was a well-known suffragette named Violet.

CandyYumYum · 06/02/2018 19:28

Sylvia is a really lovely name and no doubt it will be very much back in vogue twenty years from now.

CandyYumYum · 06/02/2018 19:29

Millicent on the other hand, now that's an absolute stinker of a name.

Kokeshi123 · 07/02/2018 08:09

Surprised nobody has mentioned Adela--a nice name.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 07/02/2018 08:19

Sylvia is lovely, and I'm not keen on Silvia!

Millicent is a fantastic name - are you sure it really doesn't go with your surname? Lydia and Lilian (which I think is due a revival more generally) are great too.

user1485182339 · 07/02/2018 20:35

Oops, double paste. Blush

CandyYumYum · 07/02/2018 20:41

Someone mentioned Charlotte Despard earlier in the thread but I just love this photo of her.

VileyRose · 10/02/2018 06:19

I'm an Emmeline. :-) What did you choose?

BikeRunSki · 10/02/2018 06:48

Leonora

Uhohmummy · 10/02/2018 13:29

Thanks all! We still haven’t decided...
Looking like it will be Emmeline or Millicent as a middle name!

VileyRose · 10/02/2018 15:45

Good choice!

kissbeforelippy · 10/02/2018 15:57

Congratulations on your new arrival! Flowers

Is your surname Bystander? Flushed Away Grin

floriad · 10/02/2018 18:54

Congratulations :)
Emmeline and Millicent are both lovely :)
I also like Lilian, Dora, Flora and Helena.

Uhohmummy · 25/02/2018 21:23

Thank you for all the suggestions!
We went for Flora as a middle name in the end. She’s gorgeous (I may be biased Wink)

I love emmiline. It's very sweet. Plus can be emma when she is older if she wants.

TatianaLarina · 25/02/2018 22:08

Christa is a nice dim of Christabel. Would DH like that?
