Are these really terrible names? Mentioned them to my mum and she said they are terrible, chavvy and 'too unique'. (Yes I know, lesson learnt!)

  • Jacinda - has been a favourite of mine since I was a kid (I had a lovely friend as a child called Jacinda) and I've always liked the name Cindy as a nickname. .
  • Indiana - always been a fan of place names and I like Indi as a nickname.
  • Devon - again, another place name I like.
  • Kayla, a longtime favourite of DH and I also like it.

Just want to gather some thoughts, honestly please, I am made of strong stuff!

Jacinda is ok, Cindy I don’t like.

All the others are a bit made up.

Indiana would be a good name for a dog.
Devon is a place
Kayla just sounds like it’s made from initials

thethoughtfox · 25/01/2018 09:15

Sorry: they all sound like the names that would be given by an American teen mother.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 25/01/2018 09:23

I like Jacinda/Cindy, I really think you should follow your heart and go with it. I also like Kayla, but would go with the former.

Indiana and Devon I think are traditionally boys names aren’t they? I quite like jacinda, I’d lose Kayla.

VioletCharlotte · 25/01/2018 09:27

I like Indiana and Kayla. But names are so subjective, what counts is that you love the name you pick.

Mishappening · 25/01/2018 09:33

Rule number one: never ask your family about names for your child! It only leads to trouble. If you call you child something your Mum hates, she will feel miffed when you use it. If she had never known what you were considering the, even if she does not like your chosen name, she will not feel put out.

My DDs did not discuss names with me and it was a surprise (some nice, some less so!) when we heard their choices after the birth.

I did not consider the naming of THEIR children to be any of my business.

However - you have asked - and I too like none of these names - sorry!

Pluckedpencil · 25/01/2018 09:46

Jacqueline
Isobel
Kay
Davina

Are all real and little used names that are similar but a lot less made up sounding. I'm sorry but I'm not keen either.

CuppaTeaTime2 · 25/01/2018 13:15

Jacinda is awful and so is Kayla.

Devon and Indianna are the better too. I quite like Indi.

Names are personal choice so choose a name that you love.

BabloHoney · 25/01/2018 13:40

I don't think Kayla is chavvy at all, I think it's really pretty! Could be short for Katharine or Michaela?

Metalhead · 25/01/2018 14:56

Not exactly my taste but they’re not terrible names by any stretch. Ignore your mum!

SadieContrary · 25/01/2018 15:05

It's absolutely your choice so stand by them by all means (my DM hated one of my baby names too - she cried when she thought I was going to use it haha) but I think they're awful and if forced to describe them then chavvy sounds about right.
Sorry OP, you did say to be honest Confused

Camomila · 25/01/2018 15:55

Jacinta is ok?

stellarfox · 25/01/2018 15:57

They are quite trendy names but everyone has their own taste. Devon or Indiana would be my picks. I prefer India over Indiana - that’s a bit more commonly used as a name.

daisypond · 25/01/2018 16:08

I like Jacinda a lot. Not keen on the others, though Michaela (Kayla) I do quite like.

TatianaLarina · 25/01/2018 16:31

Your mum is spot on.

YouBetterWORK · 25/01/2018 17:21

I like Indiana, that'd be a cool name to pull off. Also Kayla, I wouldn't say that's too "unique". DH and I toyed with Kaylee (spot the Firefly fans) for about 5 seconds but it rhymes with our surname which we weren't keen on. The only name I wasn't too keen on is Devon but that's as I would think boy name.

mathanxiety · 25/01/2018 19:05

Chavvy doesn't mean not pretty. Kayla belongs in the same category as Britney. So does Michaela / Mikayla.

MikeUniformMike · 25/01/2018 22:04

I like Jacinta but Jacinda nn Cindy is nice.

SnowGoArea · 25/01/2018 22:08

I like Indiana a lot, and also like Kayla as a shortening of Michaela (not so much as a standalone though).

Amatree · 25/01/2018 22:09

I agree with your mum, sorry!

IdblowJonSnow · 25/01/2018 22:15

Indi is cute! Not keen on the others. Agree with pp who said calling a name chavvy says more about the person making that statement.

Joeybee · 25/01/2018 22:29

-Jacinda - Not a fan, prefer Jacinta.Love Cindy as a nickname.

  • Indiana - Yep, like this name and it's not too popular. Love Indie as a nn too.
  • Devon - Not a fan at all, I can only imagine it on a boy not a girl. All it conjures up to me is a young offender.
  • Kayla - Nice, pretty name. For me it's a bit dated (there ere so many Kayla's born in the 80's) and a bit boring.
Inthedeepdarkwinter · 25/01/2018 23:20

Kayla is a bit down-market to my ears, although it is a pretty name.

Indiana fine, Jacinda fine, I wouldn't go with Devon in the UK as it just sounds a bit silly, ok in the US.

manicinsomniac · 25/01/2018 23:37

Jacinda - really like it and have never heard it before. Sounds like a softer version of Jacinta (which I also really like and have only ever met one)

Devon - really like it

Indiana - not keen as I just want to add 'Jones'. Do like India a lot though.

Kayla - quite like it. Not as interesting as your others.
