Are these really terrible names? Mentioned them to my mum and she said they are terrible, chavvy and 'too unique'. (Yes I know, lesson learnt!)

  • Jacinda - has been a favourite of mine since I was a kid (I had a lovely friend as a child called Jacinda) and I've always liked the name Cindy as a nickname. .
  • Indiana - always been a fan of place names and I like Indi as a nickname.
  • Devon - again, another place name I like.
  • Kayla, a longtime favourite of DH and I also like it.

Just want to gather some thoughts, honestly please, I am made of strong stuff!

I don't like any of them very much I'm afraid. But they are not awful. Except perhaps Devon. That's pretty awful.

DramaAlpaca · 25/01/2018 23:47

There are some very snobby comments on this thread.

I hate seeing names described as 'chavvy', it's such an offensive term. There are plenty of ways to say you don't like a name without using that word.

As for the names OP mentions, I'm not personally mad on any of them except Kayla, which I do quite like.

OK, choose a name you love.

TheCowWentMoo · 25/01/2018 23:54

I really don't like Devon but other than that I like them all, I really like Indiana. I hate the word "chavvy" anyway, it's normally just a way for middle class people to feel better about themselves, I don't think any of these names I would associate with chavvy really but even if they are what's wrong with that? If you like it go for it!

BlackberryandNettle · 26/01/2018 09:47

Hate to say it but not keen on any of them. Dislike Kayla the most, it just sounds like a chubby shortening of Michaela to me to be honest. Jacinda is quite harsh sounding, Indiana I think would constantly be asked what the family's connection to the place was. Devon is probably the least awful. How about Eden?

Potteryprincess30 · 26/01/2018 14:19

love love love Indiana Smile

ExConstance · 26/01/2018 14:27

I know a Kayla, she has an Oxford degree and works in international development - her parents who are quite posh are very proud of her, so no connotations with me. Jacinda yy - for NZ connections, Devon is a bit of something and nothing of a name and India sounds nicer than Indiana. 3 out of 4 is a good start! I think you need to see the baby before you finally settle on a name, Indiana would be a lively baby and Devon might be a very easy going character.

aronbeer · 26/01/2018 14:29

Sorry, I dislike them all too!

SpottyGecko · 26/01/2018 14:37

I really don't like them Blush

YerAuntFanny · 26/01/2018 14:39

Jacinda - for some reason I would automatically assume was an Indian heritage name however once I had met one that would obviously change and be a non issue.

Indiana - I know an Indiana, her parents are a bit movie obsessed so all 4 kids are names after major characters. She is referred to as Indi day to day. I prefer India personally as it just flows better.

Devon - I really dislike this, hated it from when I was a teen and first heard of Devon Sawyer. It's a bit high school cheerleader for me.

Kayla - I know several Kayla's (about 6 I think) between 5 and 25 years old, all lovely and I've always liked it as a name.

Go with what you love and sod everyone else's opinions 😉

If you read the lists of newly qualified barristers, architects etc you will see all sorts of names.
There is snobbery about names. Some scream out named after a footballer or celebrity to me, so I would (and did) err on the side of caution. Some names are just fashion and once they are no longer fashionable they don't have much appeal. Some names lose their appeal by being too popular.
A name that is classic and classless is a safe bet but there are loads of people on here who think that such names are boring.

Consider if you will like the name in 20 years' time. Did you like it 10 years or 5 years ago? Would you still like the name if your DC was in a class with 3 other Firstnames.

My DCs have classic names that ended up being very popular. They were pretty much known as Firstname Lastname because of it, but the names were nice and they were perfectly happy with them.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 26/01/2018 15:05

I don't like any, sorry.

India is nice though instead of Indiana.

midsomermurderess · 26/01/2018 15:17

Not keen on any of them. For some reason(well, I have only ever seen or heard it there) Jacinta and its variations seems to be to be very Australian, particularly amount 30-somethings. Not, of course, that that means it should be discounted.

Laniakea · 26/01/2018 15:20

Jacinta or India would be nice.

Kayla is my least favourite name ever & Devon isn't much better tbh.

stopbeingadramallama · 26/01/2018 15:30

Hideous

jaimelannistersgoldenhand · 26/01/2018 16:32

The most famous Indiana is Indiana Jones who is male so I'd discount that for a girl. India or Indigo gives the nickname Indie too.

The Devon's that I know are 50/50 male and female but all American. I think this gives the impression it's chavvy.

Kayla/Michaela/Mikayla - I agree with your mum on this. It's one of those names that I think relate to a certain time period (like Tracey in the 80s) but in this case I think of the late 90s.

MammieBear · 26/01/2018 17:20

Your choice entirely but not keen myself

CakeRattleandRoll · 27/01/2018 23:22

Really like Jacinta, prefer it to Jacinda.
