Rio as a girls name?

I love the name Rio but i’m wondering if people view it as a boys name only. I also like the name Ria, but my other daughter is called Lila and I would prefer if their names didn’t share the same ending. Thoughts?

no

BonnieF · 24/01/2018 22:28

Sounds like a stripper's stage name.

Plumes · 24/01/2018 22:29

Duran Duran fan?

RavenWings · 24/01/2018 23:01

I agree, it's too stripper-y.

RavenWings · 24/01/2018 23:02

What about Riona, OP? Ree-ohna. It's an Irish name. Unfortunately it still has the a ending but it's a million times better than Rio.

Valerrie · 24/01/2018 23:02

Is she going to dance on the sand?

CuppaTeaTime2 · 24/01/2018 23:11

I like it. If you like it, go for it. It's definitely a girls' name.

SpottyBrolly · 24/01/2018 23:13

Valerrie you beat me to it. I'd say more of a boy's name. Ravens wing suggestion is nice.

KatnissMellark · 24/01/2018 23:15

Nope

FinnegansCake · 24/01/2018 23:15

Pronounced “rear”?

isthismummy · 24/01/2018 23:21

It just makes me think of Rio Ferdinand. It's a boys name to my ears.

gingerbread88 · 24/01/2018 23:36

I have a friend called Rio, I like it

mari652 · 24/01/2018 23:42

Maybe not exclusively a male name but many will assume it is so she is going to face some cross purposes/ confusion.

Although, if some get their way there won't be any gendered names or gender so it may not matter so much in the future Hmm

Beeziekn33ze · 25/01/2018 00:06

Rianne?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 25/01/2018 00:14

Oh l like it, but be prepared for all the
"Oh after the song" questions.

mammmamia · 25/01/2018 00:24

I like it

LovingLola · 25/01/2018 00:24

Rio Ferdinand?

SuperBeagle · 25/01/2018 03:39

I'd assume a Rio was a boy, especially if their sibling was called something as feminine as Lila.

Romy or Romilly? Ramona?

hevonbu · 25/01/2018 04:05

A famous (female) cook was called Ria, with an a at the end.

lljkk · 25/01/2018 04:14

I know a girl Rio, 13yo. Very ordinary kid & family. Nothing tawdry.

Teapot13 · 25/01/2018 04:18

A family at our local school has a baby girl Rio.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 25/01/2018 07:40

Tiger?

daisypond · 25/01/2018 12:05

Rio sounds like a boy's name, as it's from the Spanish masculine noun for river, so odd to give it to a girl. Ria means estuary - which doesn't really have the same romantic ring to it. How about Rhea, which is a girl's name - from the Greek myths?

JuliannaBixby · 25/01/2018 12:26

Rio is awful even for a boy.

Rhea?
