I like both, and we have a very common/classic surname. Middle name will be John. Which would you go for

Louis, unless you’re Spanish.

iggleypiggly · 19/01/2018 14:56

Is that Luis (Lewis) ? Or (Louis) ?

TatianaLarina · 19/01/2018 14:56

Luis is the Spanish version.

soundsystem · 19/01/2018 14:56

Hugo

DuggeeHugs · 19/01/2018 15:32

Hugo

pipilangstrumpf · 19/01/2018 15:36

Luis is lovely! I prefer it that way, pronounced Lu-is.

pipilangstrumpf · 19/01/2018 15:38

Luis may be Spanish but it's also used in Germany. I think it works better in the UK than the French version.

ChocolateCrunch · 19/01/2018 16:04

Hugo

Kannet · 19/01/2018 16:09

I'm so torn. I like both spelling of luis/Louis but we don't live in U.K. and luis would be the best spelling where we live. Think I might have to flip a coin

OP posts:
DramaAlpaca · 19/01/2018 16:09

Luis

TatianaLarina · 19/01/2018 16:36

I’d go for Hugo then as I don’t like Luis.

I think it works better in the UK than the French version

Disagree because everyone knows Lewis and Louis (Looee) but people don’t know how to pronounce Luis (Looeece). Altho OP isn’t in the UK anyway.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 19/01/2018 17:57

Louis/Luis.

Joeybee · 19/01/2018 20:24

Hugo - My fave name right now. It's strong and intelligent sounding. Hugo is hard to judge based on the name - can imagine a gentle, quiet boy named Hugo, also can imagine a loud, boisterous boy named Hugo.

Luis is nice, and underused. It's just a bit delicate sounding to me, a bit blah.

DryIce · 19/01/2018 20:35

I love Luis, but I would pronounce that differently to Louis (which I also love!). You seem to be in implying you would pronounce them the same?

If so, I would go with Hugo to avoid pronunciation issues. Hugo is also a lovely name

helpmum2003 · 19/01/2018 20:37

I would go for Hugo to avoid pronunciation issues also. It's a lovely name.

Lucylululu · 20/01/2018 06:29

I love Luis and don't see why you would need to spell it the French way rather than the Spanish way? Neither is a British name so why is Louis more suitable than Luis? I much prefer the Spanish spellings of names and also it will be less common this way

BaffledMummy · 20/01/2018 07:06

Hugo! Lovely name

SwinginFromTheChandelier · 20/01/2018 09:43

Luis, the spelling is fine!

Luis, Lewis, Louis can be pronounced Loo-wiss

Louie and Louis (again) can be pronounced Loo-eee

pipilangstrumpf · 20/01/2018 10:48

Luis makes the pronunciation obvious, Lu-is.

Louis, the French version, will be pronounced Lou-ee by French speakers but Lou-is by many others ( eg St Louis).

Outside of France I prefer Luis or Lewis.

ladybirdsaredotty · 20/01/2018 11:34

But Luis is said Loueese, not Lewis...

pipilangstrumpf · 20/01/2018 17:27

I say Luis exactly like Lewis, Loo-is.

pipilangstrumpf · 20/01/2018 17:27

The girls name Louise is pronounced Loo-ees

Pemba · 20/01/2018 18:00

I don't know, I quite like Luis, but the Spanish pronunciation sounds almost the same as the far more well known girls name, Louise, to British ears. Perhaps that may not be a problem where you are, though, is he ever likely to live in the UK? I agree Louis is lovely.

Hugo is fine but has a very posh, public school educated vibe in the UK. Again, might not be a problem wherever you are.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 20/01/2018 18:03

Love Louis. It sure about the Luis spelling.

DryIce · 20/01/2018 19:48

I say Luis kind of like Louise, but where Louise rhymes with wheeze Luis rhymes more with geese.

I say Louis as Lou-ee

And Lewis as Lou-is

Which pronunciation were you after OP?
