What do you think of Scarlett?

Rebeccaslicker · 17/01/2018 18:32

Having a little girl in a couple of months, all being well, but we cannot agree on any names!! Scarlett is about the only one we both like.

I loved it when I was younger, as I loved "gone with the wind", but then Scarlett johansen came along and made it all popular Angry

Do your kids know lots of little Scarletts? What do you think of it as a name?

Thank you!!

Only known 1 Scarlett and that was 20 years ago - and she was about 5yo at the time!

Love the name and she was an absolutely beautiful child inside and out.

Smoliver · 17/01/2018 22:34

I like Scarlett. I only know one.

If you're looking for alternatives, how about Colette? Sounds similar and her nn could be CoCo or Cole. Or Cosette, like from Les Miserables?

Joeybee · 17/01/2018 22:38

I like Scarlett, it's quite a cool name. I think of Scarlett Moffatt now when I hear that name!
I think it was more popular a few years ago than now. The lack of obvious nicknames for Scarlett puts me off though. I suppose you can get Letty from it.

Clarabumps · 17/01/2018 22:44

I would be one of those annoying folk who insisted on Scarlett Full Name.
I love Scarlett, it's an amazing name. Huge GWTW fan here, I also love Agatha. (Aggie). You both have excellent taste Grin

mum2be2boys · 17/01/2018 23:09

I love the name Scarlett. I've never met one.

HappyLollipop · 17/01/2018 23:11

I think it's a beautiful name and it only met one in her mid-20s

CAAKE · 17/01/2018 23:12

Lovely.

GraceHelen · 17/01/2018 23:36

It's such a lovely name!

mathanxiety · 18/01/2018 07:25

I like Aggie (whether Agatha or Agnes) a lot more, I have to say.

Scarlett is a very harsh name, to my ear.
There is the 'scar' syllable, and then scarlet fever, and the word means 'mortified with embarrassment' in Ireland.

If you like Gone With The Wind, would you consider Vivien? Or even Tara?

MyPreciousWaja · 18/01/2018 07:29

I have a ten year old Scarlett and she's never had her name shortened at all by any of her friends. I've always loved the name (inspired by GWTW) and have met very few other Scarletts. There's a little one in Reception class in my daughter's school, and one in the school I teach in. So not common at all.

Rebeccaslicker · 18/01/2018 08:24

I really love Vivienne, or vivi for short. DP promptly said, "we're not having a 70 year old." Honestly, he's so hard to please. Some names I like that he has rejected include:

Ellie/elena
Elizabeth
Ruby
Violet
Amber
Lucy
Alexandra
Maria/Ria
Laura/laurel/Lauren
Penelope
Anna

I don't like Aggie but I might have compromised on taggie (I also liked Rupert for a boy!) until queen jilly let her down so spectacularly in the last book. So no Aggie, taggie or Maggie for me now!

There seems to be a lot of love for Scarlett or scarlet though, which is great. The only other problem is DP's surname, which is pretty ugly - but I can't change that!!! Grin

Vivien/Vivienne is quite popular.

Could you show him a list of the top 100 names if he is not familiar with trends?

You don't have to give DD your DP's surname.

Rebeccaslicker · 18/01/2018 11:19

Well, our first has his surname and I'd like them to be the same. It mattered to him more than it mattered to me - plus DD1 is named for my mother, so it seemed fair!

I can't say it as it's very unusual but my goodness it rhymes with some unfortunate things!!

NewYearNiki · 18/01/2018 23:26

Charlotte sounds almost the same.

Charlotte / Scarlet

Not has harsh as the scar sound at the beginning.

MakChoon · 18/01/2018 23:47

My 7yo dd has a (very lovely) Scarlett in her class and I think she's the only one we know.

I think it's a brilliant name, strong and beautiful, and I'm very fussy about names Grin I liked very few girls' names when I was pregnant, dh and I could only agree on one name - which is what she's ended up with!

I also love Ruby from your list. We avoided it partly because it seemed then like it was becoming very popular at the time but as it turns out we've only met one!

PastaOfMuppets · 19/01/2018 00:24

@NewYearNiki I know of someone who recently had identical twin girls who they named Scarlett and Charlotte

All I think in my head when I hear either of those two names is '... the Harlot'. Maybe it's too many years as a teacher.

Was a GWTW fan and always loved the name Scarlett because it seems to hold so much passion and determination and energy - til I heard the rhyme with 'harlot'. Plus, we all know Katie was her actual first name in the book.

OP, if you like a name go for it.

duckponds · 19/01/2018 04:16

Just makes me think of Scarlett Fever and ‘Scar’ as a nn 😳

duckponds · 19/01/2018 04:17

It is number 18 in the UK so fairly popular, if that was a concern

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 19/01/2018 04:25

I really like Scarlett. Ended up being DD’s middle name. DM and MIL reacted really badly to it for some reason but “politely” wouldn’t say way. My cleaner is more outspoken and said, “you can’t call a kid Scarlett! Scarlett the Harlot??” But I still love it and it was very nearly a first name.

isthismummy · 19/01/2018 08:05

I really like it as it makes me think of the beautiful Vivienne Leigh in Gone With The Wind🙂 Although technically she was Katie Scarlett.

earlylifecrisis · 19/01/2018 08:16

I teach a couple of teenagers and I know one who is 2. I think it's lovely

NataliaOsipova · 19/01/2018 08:19

I like it, but it is quite popular now. Always makes me think of Gone with the Wind too...

PissedOffNeighbour · 19/01/2018 08:24

I love the name and don’t know any personally.

Did anyone see GWTW on Christmas Eve? We had tara’s Theme at my DM’s funeral and I spent most of the 4 hours in tears Sad every time I heard it.

EggsonHeads · 19/01/2018 08:31

Quite common if that bothers you. Could be worse though, you could be considering Hyacinth.

Luxembourgmama · 19/01/2018 08:38

I think its fabulous but i think you'd need to be confident to carry it off.
