What do you think of Scarlett?

Having a little girl in a couple of months, all being well, but we cannot agree on any names!! Scarlett is about the only one we both like.

I loved it when I was younger, as I loved "gone with the wind", but then Scarlett johansen came along and made it all popular Angry

Do your kids know lots of little Scarletts? What do you think of it as a name?

Thank you!!

I know a six month old Scarlett, it's a lovely name and she gets Lettie as a shortened version

Rebeccaslicker · 19/01/2018 09:43

I like charlotte a lot but just can't bring myself to do it - we have a few royal names in the family as it is, and we'd just look like Middleton fanboy/fan girls 🙈

My friend has a george who is a year older than Prince George and a charlotte who is a year older than princess Charlotte. They've escaped the third one by sticking at two!!

I think of Scarlett as an 80’s stripper name along with Tiffany, Jade, Lola etc.

stellarfox · 19/01/2018 09:50

I’ve always though Scarlett was pretty, but names that have multiple spellings always bother me. She will have to say Scarlett with two t’s whenever spelling her name. That isn’t a reason not to use it, it’s just something I would find annoying! Also not keen on Scar but as long as long as that doesn’t catch on I think it’s a pretty name.

passmethewineplease · 19/01/2018 09:51

I have a Scarlett. I love it. Don't know of any others.

happymummy12345 · 19/01/2018 09:57

I know off one (someone I was at college with years ago, still FB friends), has a daughter called Scarlett. I think it's nice.

Hayls17 · 19/01/2018 09:58

My 9mo DD is Scarlett! I haven’t met another one at any baby groups. We sometimes shorten to Scarly but the scar thing really doesn’t bother me!

FizzyGreenWater · 19/01/2018 10:02

Why does it always 'matter' to the DPs more than the women? Angry

OP. Tell him that he's getting the surname, and you will therefore choose the first name.

If he doesn't agree, then fine, this baby can have your surname, yes? That's fair, one each.

Cannot BELIEVE a bloke who actually hasn't even got the right to register the baby himself is going to get his surname used and is STILL trying to lay the law down about first names!

passmethewineplease · 19/01/2018 10:19

Hayls we call our DD Scarly Warly Blush

It just stuck. Grin

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 19/01/2018 12:09

Aggie?? Shock no way, awful name!

Lettice with nn Letty?

orangeisafruitandcolour · 19/01/2018 12:13

I know one she's five, she only gets called by her full name, or a pet name not related to Scarlett at all.

BarGirl · 19/01/2018 12:14

My friend has a Fushia and an Emerald. I think Scarlet is lovely. If you like it, use it. Don't worry about what internet strangers think.

Rebeccaslicker · 19/01/2018 12:28

I think you pick your battles in any relationship. DP lost his dad so his unusual family name means a lot to him - mine is quite generic so it honestly didn't bother me. If it had, you can bet I would have put my foot down!

I like the argument the mother uses in the "divine secrets" sequel when the father objects to tallulah on the basis that he's not naming his daughter after someone who claimed to be "as pure as the driven slush". "Mama said she was the one who had thrown up and carried me for 9 goddam months and she'd name me after whoever she liked"!

It's ok, although I think part of the appeal in the past may have been its quirkiness, which isn't the case now as it is quite popular.

I know a Scarlett who has beautiful red hair and it really suits her, but I am less keen if there is no obvious red connection (though perhaps that is me being weird because the name Ruby I can imagine suiting a wider range of children - maybe that is because it is a jewel as well whereas Scarlett is purely a colour.)

MountainVista · 23/01/2018 07:42

A good friend has a baby Scarlett, I wasn't that keen and very surprised to find it is top 20. It is tipped to be one of the 'names of 2018'.

I personally can't get past thinking of the colour, do you really really like red?

If you like Charlotte and royals are the only issue, don't worry about it. There is a reason such names are popular. Do you think there were lots of Margarets and Annes plagued by comparisons to princesses in previous decades? It will pass, you'll just have to weather a few comments when you first announce name.

If you love Scarlett as a name, go for it, but don't be swayed by it feeling a bit different, as it is probably destined to be of its time.

NataliaOsipova · 23/01/2018 10:46

You wouldn't - it is such a classic name. If you call her, say, Eugenie then people will instantly think of the princess. But not with Charlotte.

CuppaTeaTime2 · 23/01/2018 11:12

It's okay. It always makes me think of a prostitute (sorry). Also, I've heard many people pronouce it as Charlotte and not be able to get their head around the 'Sc' beginning.

ScrambledSmegs · 23/01/2018 11:19

I've only met one, a really lovely kid, thought she'd make a great future Prime Minister! It's a great name. Also it's been around for a while so hardly outlandish.

People will always have differing opinions on names, I remember being surprised when a colleague expressed revulsion at the name Emily. Not just 'it's too popular' but honest-to-goodness hatred Shock

Rinceoir · 24/01/2018 06:53

I wouldn’t use it because I’ve lived most of my life in Dublin where it’s often used as slang for embarrassment.

Atticusss · 25/01/2018 09:45

Really overused. My 10 year old has a similar sounding name and is always getting her name mistaken for it. There are about 5 in her year. My reception child has 4 in their year as well.

nivky · 23/02/2018 12:00

I’m due in April and I’m thinking Scarlett also. I would go with shorter versions being Scarla or Ettie...

It was not on list til my dad brought up the name. I also love Vivienne, Ada and Grace but other half doesn’t love them....

toffee1000 · 23/02/2018 20:00

Don't use Lettice, whatever you do. It'd be like calling your child Carrot or Celery or Onion.
I like Scarlet, but again just with the one T. I don't particularly mind the "scar" bit, plus I don't live in Ireland so the association with the slang for "embarrassment" wouldn't ever come up, I've only ever seen that on MN. I don't have kids yet, and if I do I may end up with boys.

dingdongdigeridoo · 23/02/2018 20:35

My friend has a cat with this name. It’s a cute cat though.

selftitledalbum · 23/02/2018 20:36

Very common

enpointeredshoes · 23/02/2018 20:42

I always think of Vivienne Leigh and that's not a bad thing at all. Smile
