Really leaning towards a kind of unisex name now and I'm very drawn to Lennox for my baby girl. She's due 7th March but my last came early so honest opinions most welcome as struggling so much to decide (my turn this time as partner decided for last daughter).

Thanks all Smile

Know a girl now 8 called Lennox. It’s really not a great name for a girl.

froshiechipandbrickie · 22/12/2017 22:03

I wasn’t trying to get stuck on the definition / have a debate, sorry. Blush

But is Lennox actually commonly considered, listed or referred to as a gender neutral / unisex name?

It’s a very masculine name in my personal opinion (other people might obviously have a different opinion, maybe the majority does regard it as gender neutral. But it is almost exclusively used for boys in the UK).

I’m obviously not trying to tell you what to name your daughter and you’re obviously free to use a masculine name. And as I said, there are some masculine names I myself actually love for girls/women...

But I do think that it’s important to consider that the general population might not see a name as gender neutral. So... if you’re after a truly ‘gender neutral’ name Lennox might not be the name you’re looking for.

And I’m glad you like Farley :)

It seems to be used for boys and girls around the world, more for girls in America, more for boys here in the uk (though we discovered a Scottish female Lennox from a poster on here who was an actress in the 30s).

I hear from others it is a Scottish clan and has been used as a name for both girls and boys which is interesting.

I think as soon as there is a 'famous' person with a name a lot of people will associate it with them ans their gender. i.e Lennox Lewis who was born in West ham, so I understand that us in the UK will probably first think of him

Apparently even Mr Lewis was only 'given the name Lennox by the doctor, who said he looked like a Lennox' Grin

Lennox is ranked 443 for boys and ranked 716 for girls in the US.

It’s ranked 447 for boys and 1571 for girls in England & Wales.

So yeah, some people are using it as girl’s name... (but I personally still don’t like it, tbh 🤷🏼‍♀️)

It was derived from the name of a district, according to this: www.behindthename.com/name/lennox

Good luck finding the right name :) !

What about Lennon? As in Lennon Stella the young girl in Nashville

Potteryprincess30 · 23/12/2017 17:10

I do like Lennon @Elsouth but I'm also guilty of name associations and although I'm obviously fine with any masculine connections, the John Lennon affiliation would be too strong for me. Mum was a huge beatles fan, though not such a huge John Lennon fan actually Grin

Can anyone direct me to a serious baby name thread?

OliviaStabler · 23/12/2017 17:16

In my opinion Lennox is a boys name. Don't care about lists etc, I would not use it for a girl.

BluePlasticBuddha · 23/12/2017 17:37

Marlowe was nice.

Could be Marly as a baby.

mathanxiety · 27/12/2017 09:34

I love it. I know one UMC girl named Lennox in the US.

Love the NN Lenny (Lenny Kuhr a favourite singer of mine).

I seem to recall a famous family of Lennox sisters from the 1700s. Iirc, some of them married Irish aristocrats.

mondler · 27/12/2017 22:02

I'm another one that's seen/heard it on Melissa and Joey. It really suited her.

Ceesadoo · 27/12/2017 22:08

I don't like Lennox because of harsh 'uks' sound. I prefer Lennon for a girl.

Ceesadoo · 27/12/2017 22:09

Oooh love Eden and Cameron 👌👌👌

Ceesadoo · 27/12/2017 22:10

Hadley reminds me of a purse.

user1459464195 · 27/12/2017 22:11

OP are these the sort of names you are looking for?

Hayden
Quinn
Sydney
Kenzie
Harper
Bailey
Scout
Harley

eastlondoner · 27/12/2017 22:13

Lennox is not unisex. It's a boy's name.

Potteryprincess30 · 27/12/2017 22:19

@mathanxietyglad that's so cool you love it! I too was thinking the name Lenny (or dare I say) even Len was super cute. I take on board others criticisms and do understand the dislike too, it is a fairly unusual and strong female/baby name.

@user1459464195 I definitely like a good few of those, and actually love Kenzie though fear I would be massively judged for that one on here and out and about generally Blush

Will always love Eden @Ceesadoo its in my top three for sure but yes, Hadley is some kind of purse make isn't it? though there is a female guardian journo who writes fairly hilarious stuff that definitely pulls it off. Think its out of the running for sure though

@BluePlasticBuddha really like Marlowe but the Marley thing as a nick name makes me think of Marley and me, the dog film Grin

Lennox, Cameron and Dylan are all boys names.

expatinscotland · 27/12/2017 22:27

Dear god! NO.

dotdotdotmustdash · 27/12/2017 22:29

If Lennox and Hadley are considered 'gender neutral' then surely Catherine and Susan would be too? Actually, it means that there would be no gender specific names at all. I'm not totally opposed to that but it would be an uphill battle to get the rest of the world to go along with it!

Charitygirl1 · 27/12/2017 22:39

Yup, ‘gender-neutral’ always seems to mean girls being called boys names, not the other way round. I think we all know why.

rainbowlou · 27/12/2017 22:55

I met a girl called Elliot years ago, I loved that for a girls name
