Everyone hates the name but I love it, what do you all think?

First rule of baby names:

DONT ASK ANYONE FOR THEIR OPINION

yellowfrontdoor · 16/12/2017 17:52

I've been OBSESSED with the name Nancy since Stranger Things, but can't use it because it would clash horrifically with our surname.

If you love it, use it, ignore everyone else.

Trampire · 16/12/2017 17:52

I love Nancy.

I have an Aunt Nancy who is just the coolest EVER. I also watch Stranger Things and liked it on a younger girl when I heard it. I think it's great.

RichmondAvenue · 16/12/2017 17:54

Nope. Awful name.
MIL suggested it for my DD, along with Samantha. Er no. Sienna's awful too.sorry.

BoundByBriars · 16/12/2017 17:55

It really doesn't matter what others think of your choice of name but I LOVE Nancy and know a couple of little ones and a few mid-thirties women with the name.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/12/2017 17:56

it would be like calling your kid Nottingham or something, lol.

Yeah - or Chelsea, or Paris . . . . or . . . . Sienna (Siena is an Italian city - different spelling, same pronunciation)

ivykaty44 · 16/12/2017 17:57

Don’t mind the name but think it’s great for many reasons, not so easy to shorten, only ever seen it spelt one way so the child won’t spend her whole life having to spell her name and it’s easy to pronounce

crisscrosscranky · 16/12/2017 18:05

I love Nancy although DH thinks it's an 'old lady name'- I think of Nancy Drew.

PandaCat · 16/12/2017 18:06

I like it!

SimultaneousEquation · 16/12/2017 18:08

I ADORE this name. And I know a 6yo Nancy who is very sweet. It’s a lovely, classic name. Good luck with the pregnancy, and maybe keep the name under wraps from now on Grin

LollaLaLuna · 16/12/2017 18:10

Your baby- your choice to choose any name, which you like.I knew name of my dd, years before she was born and never really cared what other people think...

IVflytrap · 16/12/2017 18:12

Nancy is definitely said with a short A here in southern England. I can see why there might be confusion, as most words with the "ance" sound in them get a long A in the southeast. Nancy is an exception to the rule, probably because it comes from from Anne originally, which is always a short A.

defineme · 16/12/2017 18:17

My grandma's name, lovely and classic. It's not different around here, loads of them in dd' scchool.

cabininthewoods2016 · 16/12/2017 18:20

Love it! I had the same comments when i told my DM the name i wanted to call my DD2. Knew i was having a girl and loved the name but in the end didn't use it😔.
Go for it!

m0therofdragons · 16/12/2017 18:21

Love the name Nancy but honestly don't tell anyone what you're considering. If you say dd has been born and her name is Nancy everyone will get used to it and it won't be an issue. Well anyone with manners will.

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 16/12/2017 18:33

We both liked it but scratched it off our list when we realised David Cameron had used it! We can’t stand the man and it weirdly tainted the name for us.

BlazingPaddles · 16/12/2017 18:34

I'd pronounce it Nancy with a short a sound (North) , but I think it may also get pronounced with a long a sound so Narncy

I doubt it. It's one of those names that's pronounced more or less the same by all English accents. For example it's Nancy with a short A in Oliver. And they're cockernees.

AmysTiara · 16/12/2017 18:41

I know a few little Nancy's. It's become quite popular over the past few years. It's certainly not a name to raise eyebrows at.

shhhfastasleep · 16/12/2017 18:45

I know a Nancy who's nearly 20. A friend's daughter. Nancy is fantastic.

twinone · 16/12/2017 18:51

My dd was going to be Nancy but my dsis' s dd arrived before mine and she took the name Angry
My dd has an equally beautiful name though Smile

oliveinacampervan · 16/12/2017 19:46

@NinonDeLenclos

At least it's not..........

Ella/Ellie/Elle/Ava/Evie/Grace/Olivia/Lily/Emma/Sophie/Mia/Bella

All lovely names. Much better than Nancy, which is a frumpy, dowdy name. Fine 95 years ago. Not now. I think it's a flash in the pan name. May as well call her Maud or Beryl.

@flyingtnx

Call your baby girl Nancy, and she will hate you for it IMO.

sinceyouask · 16/12/2017 19:51

I like Nancy. Sienna and Lorelai are not names I'd choose, but Nancy is lovely.

yikesanotherbooboo · 16/12/2017 19:52

I love Maid and Beryl , oh dear!

oliveinacampervan · 16/12/2017 19:55

You mean MAUD? Grin

wednesdayswench · 16/12/2017 20:23

I don't hate it, but it is quite old fashioned.

I think your DD could grow into the name and it's not common which is a good thing.
